First I'd like to say ,every one is different,as we all know , so what works for me may not work for you ,especially if you have a hard time sticking to a special diet. I recently cut Wheat out of my diet which is really hard to do ,because every thing has some gluten's in them,you just have to look at every thing and read every thing...I found this book called' eat right for your blood type ', this book has helped me a lot, I'm doing my best to stick to it ,I'm an A+ blood type ,which means I should be a vegetarian, no big deal,tofu is the other white meat ! My point is ; since I cut out wheat and wheat anything,my skin is clearer, I have about three different kinds of psoriasis,glutate,pustular,arthretic,and the regular kind,I hope this helps anyone out there who is suffering, my heart goes out to you...don't let it get you down,we will over come this..God Bless !

I agree with diet control. I have had Psoriasis for the past 20 years. And know for certain that it is aggravated by certain food (as well as stress) for me. I just cannot have anything with garlic or ginger in it. And - most sadly - coffee or eggs! The onset of new spots and aggravation of existing starts very quickly. Its good to know what triggers one's psoriasis. Its the best way to control it!

I'm no expert, but I don't think you need to be a vegetarian. As long as you know what to add and avoid. A few good recipes I got from the ebook I bought and natural management of psoriasis. It's reallt hard to copy from a PDF. But I think they are pretty good.

Quinoa porridge with dried apricots and pistachios
1 cup of quinoa soaked overnight, 2 cups of low fat or skimmed milk, 2 tbsp of brown sugar, pinch of salt, vanilla extract ½ tsp.
Rinse the soaked quinoa well. In a heavy bottomed pan, bring the milk to boil. Add the soaked quinoa and allow it to cook until soft. Add brown sugar, vanilla and pinch of sea salt. Cook further for a few minutes until done. Remove from heat. Serve the porridge with chopped apricots and pistachios.
Barley porridge with vegetables
1 cup barley soaked overnight, 1 carrot chopped in to fine pieces, ½ cup of green lentils, ½ cup of chopped celery, 1 tbsp of chopped garlic, ½ cup of chopped onions, ¾ cup of finely chopped leek, cilantro and parsley for garnish, salt to taste.
In a heavy bottomed pan, sauté the chopped onions and garlic for few minutes. Then add the finely chopped pieces of carrots and celery. Sauté the vegetables for few minutes. Drain the soaked barley and rinse well. Add the soaked barley to the pan along with green lentils and chopped leeks. Pour enough water into the pan, cover it with a tight lid and allow the contents to simmer for 20- 30 minutes.
Add salt and pepper to taste, garnish with chopped cilantro and parsley and serve.

These were the breakfast recipes. Got this from I've also got Pagano recipes. But I'd have to type them out. (too hard). Hope you find what you're looking for.

Hi there..I too changed my diet months ago and im 100% clear..I am on a gluten, caisen and nightshade free has worked so well for me..It doesnt work for everyone though and i wish it did because its life changing. Im glad to hear it has worked for you..stay positive

You should repost this in the Complementary and Alternative forum too.

As there a lot of people on that forum who are trying diet changes. They are sure to benefit from your experiences so far.

I cleared my lifelong P in 2008 and have pretty much maintained 100% clearance ever since.

Had a couple of small short lived flares from eating the wrong foods (discovered that amongst other things that wheat makes it worse), but nothing I could not manage or get under control.

Obviously I am not cured, since there is no known cure yet.

But having 100% P-free clear the next best thing.

It is great to be able to freely wear tee-shirts, bikinis, shorts, etc....without having to deal with some insensitive idiot pointing at your skin. People pointing out my P patches use to be the bane of my life in summer. Glad I don't have to deal with all that crap anymore.

I noticed new sites of P patches on my body - I am upset. It has been controlled for years. I don't know why it has spread. I noticed a post on blood type diets. I am B positive. Anyone out there who is also a B and on the diet? Has it changed things for you?

Have you changed anything in your diet? P is quite unpredeictable. But we can somehow try and keep in in it's litlle box by watching what we eat and keeping our stress and anxiety levels down.

The articles made me think I wish there was more interest in scientific studies with it, but I can see the problems doing so. You wouldn't think it would be all that expensive nor hard considering all the starving people in the world and incidence of psoriasis. As long as you're feeding people why not a heart healthy diet. Chances are if you're feeding them then keeping them healthy is a concern as well.

It appears that going on a Gluten, dairy, nightshade diet may do the trick. I did this VERY difficult diet for 3 weeks and saw no difference. I also stayed away from all Soy products as they are also known to cause P. May be I didn't stay long enough on the diet? How long should I stay on it until I get some clearance?

In answer to your question:

Normally 3 weeks is definitely NOT long enough to see a difference. It would take at least 3 weeks for your body to adjust to the change, let alone starting to heal or show any improvement.

Having said that, some people do see immediate results, but this is fairly uncommon.

The suggested time frame is 90 days (3 months). And it is better to just give up one thing at once because if you give up everything at once, it is hard to figure out which food is the culprit and which food is OK.

Also, if you do your research properly and arm yourself with some decent recipes, then going gluten, dairy and nightshade free is actually very easy and enjoyable.

You will pretty much need to avoid all processed food anyway, so don’t bother with those specialised gluten-free products, as they are still highly processed. The idea behind changing your diet to help P is to buy fresh nutritionally rich wholefoods and make meals from scratch.

Swapping from gluten processed foods to non-gluten processed foods is a pretty pointless exercise in the scheme of things, as the nutrient content of processed foods is either lacking or has been altered in some way.

For example: eating an organic raw fresh apple that is packed full of life giving nutrients which has been picked direct off a a billion miles away from eating a specialised gluten-free processed apple pie that has been cooked, sugared, had preservatives added, wrapped in plastic and sat on the supermarket shelf with a three month use-by date on it.

I've tried fasting for a few days then, only eating one food for three days ,if I eat meat ,my psoriasis goes bezerk,even bread, milk, dairy of any kind,so...I just try to go by that diet I'm on now, and it's helping a lot...I agree with "littlepinkpuss",that processed foods are poison,and should be avoided,even the "organic" kind, like she said, it's still 'processed food'

Hi TwoTerrye (and others seeing flareups),

I just read an interesting piece about a dermatologist at Tulane (Dr. Erin Boh) who is taking a comprehensive approach to psoriasis. The basic idea is that there are physiological conditions that can essentially mimic stress to induce flareups. So if you notice flareups but have not experienced increased stress levels, you may want to think more broadly and ask your doctor to try connecting the dots.

I tried the gluten free diet, dairy free, etc. Although I saw results, it wasn't god enough for me. Call me crazy, but I'm looking to be clear, and FAST! I was too scared to try any medications besides steroid creams which made my condition so much worse. I have psoriasis covering 70% of my body and vitamin D and fish oil almost has me cured. If i can post pictures later I will. The results are almost instant. Also, I stay away from spicy foods, red meat, tomatoes, and potatoes. I don't have any food allergies, but I do notice that potatoes and spicy foods make my patches more red. GOOD LUCK and NEVER GIVE UP! My goal was to be clear by my 21st birthday which is at the end of october, and I'm almost there. I've been fighting severe plaque psoriasis since February and the doctors had me on a run around. Light therapy was working until the doctor called and told me I owed them $750 that I do not have ($50 a treatment after insurance). It may have been for the better though because I was only fighting the symtpoms rather then the underlying causes. Drink tons of water, be positive, moisturize, and know that things will work out!

you have to be on the diets longer than three took me 6 months to be 100% clear..although i still have the hypopigmentation spots but its better than being red and itchy..its a long term commitment and there is no such thing as a "fast" cure..this works on some people but not everyone has the same results..i hope you find something that helps you clear up and remember everything takes time ..stay positive

im trying a diet also but still abit confused . i cut out meat exept for fish i bought lots of different kinds , no shellfis, .i cut out glutten. cut back on nuts and soybean . and i cut out dairy. i miss my meat but ive been stickin to the diet , i work a ficical job and ive been a bit groogy it seems like im scaried my body is lacking , im also taking vitamins and supplyments any thoughts? i mostly eat green veg (no niteshades) fish , brown rice, i tried quino but im not a fan . should i try cut soynuts? i heard they have lots of protian, i ate a lot of red meat before pretty much twize a day ,and a lot of eggs.

hillybilly, eating a healthy diet should not make you feel groggy. It is possible that all you are experiencing is an interim effect as your body adjusts to the new diet. Other thoughts:

1) Eat almonds, drink plenty of almond milk. Very healthy, loads of calcium.

2) If you exercise heavily you might be suffering from a lack of protein. Consider a vegan protein supplement (eg, hemp, rice).

3) Take a B-50 vitamin supplement ('ll find these at CVS, for example). You might find yourself lacking in vitamin B-12.

4) Be broadly mindful of how many calories you are consuming. If you are not eating enough you can certainly feel sluggish.

5) Eat often, at least 5x per day. Munching on a healthy trail mix or an apple in the mid-afternoon is a good energy booster.

I've also changed my diet completely. The itching has completely stopped although I'm still struggling with clearing the lesions. Since going on a raw diet with daily juicing (a bulb of celery a day), off wheat, dairy and meat has given me inward strength. Each Sunday, I make a special effort in visiting the local farmers market and often treat myself to a 'superfoods' pesto and sorrel leaves from the organic foods stall. Food seems to play a vital role in maintaining psoriasis and when I have a flare-up, I put an alkaline-based mud pack on the hot areas for 20 minutes a couple of times a day or the gel from an aloe vera leaf to avoid scratching that area. I've found seaweed powder and dead sea mud very useful and strongly recommend a visit to the Dead Sea, if you can afford it!

. People with psoriasis are individuals with different backgrounds, habits and medical histories, who respond to substances differently at different times. Moreover, people with psoriasis can have remissions that have nothing to do with changes in diets or treatments. These variables make it difficult to evaluate whether any specific dietary change is responsible for clearing or worsening psoriasis. The addition or elimination of one substance from the diet can be the remedy for one person and the culprit for another. There is certainly no harm in exploring how diet impacts your psoriasis, as long as your overall health is not compromised.

Some psoriasis patients believe that a wheat allergy triggers their psoriasis. Others have found success by eliminating red meat and fatty foods from their diet. The National Psoriasis Foundation message board is a good resource to learn about what diets have been successful for other psoriasis patients.

Hi all,
For those of you who have identified certain foods that trigger your psoriasis --> did you find this out solely from doing an elimination diet, or did you identifify these foods through allergy/sensitivity testing?

Also wondering - for those of you who found that gluten causes your psoriasis (or makes it worse) ---> did you have a celiac panel and/or gluten sensitivity test done, and did it show anything?

I just started doing some allergy/sensititivy testing (including a celiac panel), and I am hoping that some answers will turn up for me through that approach...if not, I'll start doing elimination diets and see what happens.

I'd say make sure you are drinking plenty of water, getting electrolytes, and if you're cutting meat out make sure you are getting adequate protein.
