Controlling diarrhea with Shortened Bowel

My dad had surgery for a herniated intestine 17 years ago, and he was left with 4.5 feet. Now at 97, he manages to maintain his weight by eating a number of small meals and generally upping his calories. However, he has been plagued on and off with diarrhea and is usually afraid to drink many fluids.

We have found some guidelines for foods that are believed to help or aggravate the condition. I'd be interested in other people's experience with diet and SBS.

Also, are there medications or fiber additives that have
been useful to you?
