I am so sorry for the rough experience this is on all of you. As a mom, I can relate to the emotionally distressing situation of having a young child in severe pain and discomfort.

It sounds like you are on the right path by taking him to the Children's Hospital. It is good that they are sending you to an infectious disease specialist, however has he been seen by a pediatric GI specialist? Have any tests besides blood tests been performed? If not, my recommendation would be to request a pediatric GI consult, as there could be something else (ie: a structural bowel abnormality) that is creating the conditions favorable to infection.

May God bless you with love, patience, perseverance and stamina as you go through this difficult time with your little guy. He is very lucky to have you as his advocate. Hang in there and get (politely but strongly) assertive with the medical team, INSISTING on tests and an answer NOW.

Pish-Posh gave some very good advice about your son seeing a GI. Also, ask the infectious disease doctor if there can be blood cultures of both bacteria and fungus. If it is a fungus and he is only getting antibiotics it will not kill the infection. If he has been ill for 15 days, it seems that he should be put in the hospital.

We will be praying for a complete recovery. I know it's hard. We've been there.

In my life experience as a parent- This sounds like 1 of 2 things to me. First-even though children get immunizations against hepatitis- this could be hepatitis A-which is like a long, severe drawn out flu. They may be sick around a month or so and lose weight. The second could be Giardiosis- The same symptoms but a spore in drinking water is to blame if you have well water. My son and I both contracted this from well water. The symptoms are the same and there is an antibiotic for this. It is very much a 5th country disease- but is seen in the states. Good luck and I feel for your child.Hopefully they will get to the bottom of this and get it straightened out.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am clueless and exhuasted. my husband just let me sleep in until 1:.00 pm. What a great ma. My son screams of pain all night long and finally it is 1:37 pm and he is laying down. They have not sent us to a GI doctor yet but they did did a exray of his little belly and found nothing. I feel they need to do a sononagram or ct scan. They also did a stool culture the first time we went in but he also came back negative but they want me to get another sample before we go tomarrow because they diddnt test the first one foe perisists, etc...Keep us in your prayers thank you four your help and concern.

Also they would not keep him in the hospital because it was a holiday weekend and they were filled with pretty much just residants and his fever was so high they didnt want him to contract anything else why his imunne system was down. They said the best place for him until monday was at hm with me and to not take him anywhere. Not sure i really agree but i didnt want some kid doing all kinds of unneccisary test to my baby either. We are going in the more to the speacilist. Also we dont have well water. thank you all for your concerns and help and please keep them coming.

Sounds like he definitely needs to see a pediatric GI specialist right away and have a CT of his belly. That is certainly indicated for severe abdominal pain. You need to push for that. Also, how is his hydration? Is he taking adequate fluids. Does he still have diareah and vomitting? If so, he should be admitted for IV fluids. Babies get dehydrated very quickly and this can be very severe. Blood work should also be repeated. Good luck. I will pray for him tonight. Gina RN

Thank you for your Prayers and concern. His hydration i fine. He has no problem taking in fluids but still has bad diarrhea. He Screamed all night and barely slept. He finally got about 3 hours sleep and jumped up fever free and playing. He also wanted to eat for the first time. He at 3 meals today and took to 3 hour naps. But inbetween he just walked around screaming and wanting me to hold him with his knees up all day. The I D doctor decided not to see him today because he had no fever. At 7:00 pm his fever returned. I am taking him in the morning no matter what they say, Something is diffently wrong.

You must insist on a CT scan of his belly, repeat bloodwork, a pediatric GI and an infectious disease specialist!!! Your baby has been sick too long. If the fever was back last night, there is an infection that needs to be addressed. It is not normal for a baBY TO have ABD. CRAMPING FOR SO LONG. I will keep praying. Let me know. Gina RN

What happened to your baby today? Did they do a CT scan? Any fever or pain today? Gina

Thank you so much for your Concern. It is nice to know there are truly caring people out there. We got in to see the I D dr. tues. He still had fever low grade(101.2) and diarhea. They ran tons of blood test and did a sonogram.Every thing came back normal. They had 2 differnt doctors come look at him and they cannot believe he hasnt had any seizures yet do to the prolonged fever, We are still waiting on the 2nd round stool culture results that was testing for perisites and the blood test for celiac disease. The only other possible things besides the peristite and celiac that the doctors can come up with is just a prolonged virus which they say would be very unusual, cronic gastritus with a prolonged virus or diabetes. I hope we figure this out soon. My baby still is so uncomfortable he only can sleep about a hour or two at a time and then he is screaming bloody murder with his kness drawn up. The reason that diabetes is a possability is he is having exssesive thirst and very friquent urination. He wakes up twice a night soaked in urine from head to toe. They is not including the times he wakes up in pain. I think i am going to go ahead and call a GI dr. today because I dont think I can wait another week for the rest of the test results.

You absolutely, positively need to have him seen by a pediatric gastroenterologist. Good luck, Gina

Just another thought - Perhaps he should be seen by an immunologist because of the prolonged fever or the infectious disease doctor can check for a primary immunodeficiency (PID). Patients with PID often have prolonged fevers because oral antibiotics/antifungals may not help and they need to be put in the hospital for IV meds.

How is your baby this week. Is he any better???? Gina RN

You are going thru so much traumatic times with both your baby and the medical system

I agree - babies do not have either the resources or time factor that adults can draw on while waiting for a diagnosis.

At the very least, your baby should have been admitted into a hospital that has pediatricians right there, 24/7, being given both IV fluids, something for pain, and replacement therapy for electrolyte and other nutrient losses.

Time is always of the essence for little ones. Please, see if one of your pediatricians will do a 'direct admit' to the pediatric floor, which would be so much more humane than going through the hassles of the ER - which is your second option.

Anything could be going wrong - from intussusception to something like appendicitis or gall bladder/pancreatic/spleen issues - who knows unless he is admitted for appropriate testing and treatment. But especially for basic physical needs support while all this is going on.

I'm never shocked anymore when I hear of endless cases like this - an emergency issue put off by medical persons until it becomes a life/death emergency. I don't know why this is happening so widespread in the USA, but it is and it is shameful.

We pray for you and your baby's quick positive resolution to his ailment, and your mind's endurance of all this.

Please keep us posted here - we care,

Hello everyone. Sorry for the delay. My son went to the pedeatrican to get the referal on mon and the pedeatrician took 1 look at him and told me to take him straight to a diffrent childrens hospital. We then went to the Er and started the serious of test over again. He was amidiatly pi on i v fluids. He was then admitted and we just go home tonight sun(1/16/11). His fever, diarrahea and cronic stomac pain have been resolved. He has a allergy to all dairy and caisien. Also possible celiac we will find out about that tomarrow.
