3" Stoma?

Thanks everyone for your replies to my previous question regarding stoma size. I have reworded the question here, as what I am curious about is WHY some people have a 1/2" stoma, and others have a 2" or 3" stoma. My own colostomy stoma is 1" but I had a friend with a colostomy whose stoma was over 2". Is this something the surgeon does, or is it determined by the diameter of one's colon or intestine? I am surprised that there is such a variation in a colon -- from 1/2 to 3".

My Doctor told me mine was called a double barrel stoma (1-1/8x2"). So maybe someday it can be easily reversed.
