All Clear!

My partner just had his 3-month check up and they say that everything looks hunky dory with nothing to be unduly concerned about right now. We are obviously relieved and I thought I'd share this news with all those undergoing treatment to give you some hope of light at the end of the tunnel.

He was also told that his flavours will start to come back soon and coincidentally this week he had commented that he seemed to be discerning slightly more tastes, though frustratingly the flavours only last for a couple of mouthfuls then disappear.

He also has a lot more energy and while he still has very little saliva he is managing to ease the problem with sprays. His new discovery is Oasis moisturising mouth spray which he says is more effective than Biotene, though you have to keep it in your mouth for longer for it to work.

His new concern right now is a slight asthma-type breathing problem, so he has to see a lung specialist about that (there is always something!) He has developed a tendency to snore very loudly as a result, either of that or from nasal congestion - I'm curious to know if this is a side-effect that anyone else suffers from?

Life isn't perfect for him and he has only regained one of the 15 kilos that he has lost, so that is something he still has to work on (the problem is that he still doesn't have an appetite and eating isn't very enjoyable anyhow). But little by little things are getting better.

I hope it can be the same for all you who are in a similar position and that those undergoing therapy will be reassured that near-normality can return, given the tincture of time.

Eleanor,

I am so happy to here that your partner is cancer clear. I know the relief and weight that is off your shoulders. I am three years clear. The nasal problem is something I still deal with but I think it is from the medication I take to produce saliva. Since I cannot take any drying medication, I just use a netti-pot nasal rinse. It really clears the sinuses. My taste buds are back to normal. Just more sensitive to spices, salt and sugar. I was told to use plastic utinsels instead of medal since everything tastes like metal at first. I just ate very mild tasting foods at first. I am still only eating moist soft foods due to the dry mouth. This I feel is chronic and something I will have to live with. The future is yours. God bless.

Thanks for the feedback Paula, and for being so positive. I've never heard of the netti-pot nasal rinse but we'll look into it. It is so encouraging to hear that your tastebuds are back to normal. He is so tired of not tasting hardly anything. The flavours come and go at the moment. He now has a candida infection in his mouth which probably isn't helping. I looked up the causes of it on-line and the list included chemotherapy, antibiotics and lack of saliva - so that figures! There's always something.... but we're sitting here enjoying a near-normal life in the sunshine by the beautiful Lake Como in Italy, so life ain't so bad...

Eleanor,

The Netti-Pot is sold in any drug store. It actually looks like a tea pot. I just take warm water and add the supplied sodium chloride & sodium bicarbante. You put the teapot up to one nostril and tilt your head. It will come out the other nostril along with what is in the nasal cavity. I do the same with the other side. This clears everything. I do this about every two to three days. For candida, probiotics are good. Like yogurt or cottage cheese. I have very limited saliva and I use biotene products. The liquid biotene I put in my mouth before I go to sleep. The mouthwash I use throughout the day. If I have no sink to spit out the mouthwash, I use the mouth spray. I have not had thrush or any mouth problems in three years. I take a prescribed pilocarpine or salagen to help with saliva. Enjoy that sunshine and beautiful scenery. May God continue to bless you.

Hi Paula, I didn't mean to just post a copy of what you wrote - I was copying and pasting it to send to my partner, and posted it instead! But thanks very much for the information. We will see if pilocarpine, salagen and Netti-Pot are available in Italy and give them a go. He uses Biotene as well as one, called Oasis mouth moisturiser I think, which he actually thinks works better than the Biotene one. We can't get it here so a friend visiting the States is bringing more back this month. If we can't get the things you suggested in Italy we could be adding our friend's shopping list :-)
