second hand smoke and allergies

We recently moved my father-in-law into an apartment complex where the previous dweller had smoked. Also the next door apartment dweller continues to smoke. My husband has many allergies and cannot stand to visit due to the smell in the apartment and I know it is not healthy for anyone else either. We have done all the painting, shampooing, vinegar, room odor things, etc. which all help, but don't eliminate the odor. I am looking at purchasing an air filter/purifier, but am overwhelmed with the information. Can anyone share info from your personal experience with what kind does or doesn't work. I would appreciate any help.

All air purifiers must be HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Air filters). The ionization models sound good but allergists consider them sub-standard.
