Head Sores

I'm in my second cycle of chemotherapy. Within the last week or so, I've developed little pimple like sores on my scalp. Does anyone who's experienced this know of any product which helps with the itchiness and soreness caused by this?

While I am a man, I have found Head and Shoulders brand to work well. My wife used it during her chemo and it seemed to help. Other women on this site have used it also.

With me, it came around the same period of time and I just used shampoo (other ladies on this site have suggested Head and Shoulders, but I just used Suave) and then put baby oil on my scalp after washing. I had my hair buzzed off, so I guess the baby oil wouldn't work if you still have hair. But it went away in a couple of weeks and I imagine it would have done that whether I used the baby oil or not. The oil just gave me a little relief while it was scabby and gross.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks for your suggestion. Perhaps I'll try this in addition to the Head & Shoulders. I too buzzed my head since so much of my hair was falling out anyways.

I got it at the same time. My friend had stopped to see me and went straight home and called her husband who is a dermatologist. He said Head and Shoulders, moisturize, and keep you head open to air as much as possible. If it is terribly itchy, try Zyrtec because that one is now drowsy antihistamine. The H&S worked like a charm. I used it daily throughout chemo. If you get a skin rash it will work just as well on that.

I have Zyrtec on hand. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll go take some right now, since my head is terribly itchy. Tomorrow I'll have to stop to get the Head & Shoulders. Thanks!

I had the red bumps with a slight itch. I used Baby shampoo and it went away. Mine was not flakey.

I found that even when I was bald, I still needed to shampoo my head. I never wore a wig, but my favorite hat was made of bamboo knit and it seemed to breathe really well. It also washed and dried quickly. Other than that, I wore cotton kerchiefs or went bald to keep my head comfortable. I think I used H&S a few times too.

Try this stuff - http://www.lushusa.com/shop/products/hair/solid-shampoos/soak-and-float It's not cheap, but it lasts and lasts and lasts. We've been using it for the past couple of years, but I'd run out of it when my hair came out, so I was using Head and Shoulders. I had a bad scalp for about 2 weeks, but when I started using this stuff again it worked to clear up my scalp really quickly.

It's all natural, vegan and free from any kind of animal testing.

the gal who shaved my head suggested
wash head with baby shampoo only
prepare a mixture of 1/2 sea breeze astringent and 1/2 bottled water. Pat the head gently with a wash cloth
apply" Isoplus Castor Oil Hair Scalp Treatment" to head. Using fingertips, massage well working upward from the nape of neck to top of head. Takes very little of this

She got this from volunteer services at MDAnderson.

says if you are receiving radiation treatments to the head or upper neck areas do not follow the above scalp treatments.

I used it and it worked for me but it does take a while for the bumps to go away.
found the scalp treatment at a beauty supply shop.

Head & Shoulders was a really bad idea for me. Perhaps it's because I have dry skin and have had problems with eczema. My head got really dry and itchy. I thought I was going to go nuts from the itchiness.

My doctor prescribed an antibiotic and my beautician recommended Nioxin Cleanser & Nioxin Scalp Therapy Condition. In addition, a lady at the natural food store recommended "Bach Rescue Cream". Incredibly, within less than 24 hours a lot of the white heads cleared up and the dryness/itchiness was greatly reduced. Now a couple of days later, it's much much better. It's still itchy to a certain degree since some of the dry skin is peeling, but it's a great deal better.

I would definitely recommend Nioxin over Head & Shoulders if you experience the same sort of problem. Plus, if you get a lot of the sores that are like white heads it probably is a good idea to mention it to your doctor if it doesn't clear up fairly quickly.

P.S. I checked with my oncologist on Friday when I went for chemo & she said the Bach Rescue Cream was fine to use. It's got all natural ingredients which don't clog the pores.
