After another series of test, bloodwork, and doctor appointments - still no answers as to why. Maybe there is not an answer. The doctor is recommending my husband for a liver transplant. I am scared.

I am so sorry Its a bad situation when you can't get the answer I will be praying for you and your husband
Hi there
I have just been through this whole experience, and being scared is an understatement. my husband has had a liver transplant june 1st and I have never seen him look better, he has so much energy is absolutely unbelievable. You must now really look after his health, low salt diet, keeping him fit and mostly keeping him positive. By doing this you wil have him in the best possible condition for transplant. No Alcohol at all !!!!! stay away from the alternative medicne . Look after his teeth. Good Luck !!!!
We have changed our diets - low fat, low sodium - we rarely eat out because of the sodium factor. He has been alcohol free since he was diagnosed in November. He is active and seems to be doing good which is a big plus but it has the doctor scratching his head. We are seeing a few more specialist this week.
Deidre, I am glad to hear your husband is doing good after his transplant. Does he have to take meds for the rest of his life?
Peggy, thanks for your prayers! We really appreciate it - and we still believe in miracles.
I will be praying for both of you and your families.
Keep in touch.
Tobi
Hi there,
Yes my husband will be on drugs for the rest of his life. This is to stop rejection, but so far no side effects. Taking the drugs is not a dig deal. You will just have to watch your husbands liver function tests and keep a note. What they watch are the billirubin, Gamma Gt, AST & ALT levels, they will then give you a MELD score. Just ask all questions no matter how strange they may seem. Low salt diets are the pits but pepper is OK and chilli, just to add a bit of flavour, otherwise fresh is best. Still go out for dinner steak and fish are ok. Stay away from the milk thistle drinks (alternative medicnes) I am in Australia and they will not consider you for transplant if you are taking chinese herbs etc. To begin with its all quite a daunting experience, but hang in there, if you are being recommended for transplant, its pretty serious but they will go over him with a fine tooth comb and he will be monitored. Everything will be alright. Also I dont know if they said anything to you but STAY AWAY from pain killers especially anti inflamitaries (even the rub in kind) they will kill the liver. Also as I said before watch his teeth, with liver disease your teeth are really at risk. I know exactly where you are at just stay calm and positive, this is not the end but just a slight detour in the journey of life. Talk about it. Stay in touch and let me know how it all goes.
