Stanley's Hearing

0 Recommendations

I haven't posted in a while regarding my son's hearing. He has recieved his hearing aids and doing well. I was on a mission for a while to find out why he is losing his hearing. After 6 months we finally have the cause. Progressive hearing loss. Needless to say, it is a hard pill to swallow but not as hard as the initial, diagonisis.

The good news is we know what it is the bad new is it will get worse. I am thankful for what the hearing aids are doing, and pray that they will contine to work as long as possible.

Thanks for the update. You seem to be handling the info really well and that is great. Stanley will benefit greatly from your positive attitude. I wish him the best of luck!!! I also wish him hearing aides that work forever!! Keep up the good work, mama!! :)

Your attitude is great! My LG passed all of his hearing tests early on but recently his audiologist is watching him closely. We took him in at 19 months and she was concerned about his speech. He also tested absent for OAEs in the left ear and didnt do as well as he had done in the past on other tests. Luckily a few days later he passed the ABR (unsedated??) so I thought we were in the clear. He started ST and has made huge improvement. We went back to the audiologist again a few weeks ago ( he is now 27 months) and this time he didnt pass the OAE in either ear and in the soudfield he acted oblivious to all sounds other than the techs voice. It is all very confusing. We have to work with him at home on dropping objects in a bucket when he hears a sound and go back in a few weeks to be tested again. I am not sure why another ABR wasnt ordered and the audiologist didnt seem very concerned bc his speech has improved so much she just said she wanted to watch him closely. Anyways I got a copy of his records in the mail from the visit ( i think bc EI requested it ) and a dx of unspecified hearing loss was noted. This is all very confusing because he seems to be doing very well. It seems if there is a problem it is progressive. I havent met anyone else whose child started showing hearing loss later on and am interested in more of your story. When did you and his Drs start noticing a problem?

drakesmom,
I am thinking that you and I may have discussed this before (when talking about ABR's and our kiddos), but my memory is not what it used to be:) LOL! So, I thought I'd throw this in. I was not a preemie, but while doing all this testing, on one of my girls, we learned that I have hearing loss in both ears. We have not been able to determine the cause or if it will get worse. It scares me to think that it may be hereditary and I might pass this to my girls. Please keep me updated on your son's testing, etc.

Stanleysmom,
I would be interested in any future info you have also! Thanks for sharing!!

Good luck to you guys and your kiddos!!

M-and-D-Mommy,
I believe your right. I think you responded to a thread I wrote a few months back. You are right it is scary not knowing. I will certainly keep you updated. It is so frustrating I thought once he passed the ABR we were OK but now I am not sure if another one is done I am going to ask for sedation so I dont have any doubts about the results. The only person to have hearing loss in my family that I am aware of was my Great Grandfather but I am not sure of the details he had a hearing aid for as long as I can remember.

Thanks alot and good luck with your little ones as well.
