Osteoporosis pain or Not

0 Recommendations

I had a cracked vertabra and the surgeon said I needed to have kypoplasty done so I did. He said after I had it done he assured me I would be totally pain free.Well I was for 5 days then the pain started all over again. He said it was just muscle spasms and still stands on that diagnosis today.I had a bone scan done and found out that I have osteoporosis of the hip and spine.I have severe pain of the spine and my legs at times are so painful I think I have rubbed the skin off them.I am on pain meds but they just don't seem to be strong enough.I get so fustrated that I can't do a lot of things most days. I live in a city and the Dr' here aren't the best. I am now wondering if my pain is from the osteoporosis or is it something else? I am now waiting for a referel to go into the big city and let some real good Dr's look at all my MRI's and paperwork and hoping they will come up with some answers for me. Can't live my life like this I am only 50 yrs old.

Dear southsidegirl,

I can well understand how you must be feeling, but I am sure things will clear up with better medical aid in the big city.

As far as I can recall my doctor in New Delhi at that time in 2007 had told me I had osteopenia and my sister had osteoporosis. He had also said: "Osteoposoris creeps up on you and has no symptoms of pain. The danger there is from easy fractures."

So it is possible that the pain may not be related to osteoporosis.

You might ask your doctors whether you need Vitamin D in large doses-- depending upon whether you remain mostly indoors. That plus Calcium might help alleviate the pain if it is in the muscles and bone from other causes.

I know how awful I feel when I get aches and pains in the legs, from walking too much.

There is a physiotherapist who has a website on pain in the back, legs etc -- and she always attributes this to posture pf the spine and legs, even though yours may not be that simple a case. But you may read her website and see if anything there is of any help:

"Dr. Jolie Bookspan

Your Friend, Diane

Diane, I also have alot of pain and stiffness. The doctor has told me that osteoporosis is a silent disease and doesnot have pain. that is why in most people are not dx. until they have a broken bone. but I think that all people are different and that some of us do have the pain. I have been told in so many words the pain is in my mind because i know that i have a disease. Now I am telling you that to say you know your body and please keep looking for a doctor that will listen and work with you. the pain is real and is coming from something. I hope it helps you to know that you are not alone in this battle. Oh yea I am only 43 years old and the mother of a 14 and a 9 year old. I hope that this helps you.

Southside:

You should have your vitamin D levels checked. Mine are very low and my endocrinologist said that my leg and back pain could actually be muscular pain from such low vitamin D levels. I also have a lot of spine problems including 6 herniated discs and degenerative disc disease, so I'm sure some of the pain is related to that. I'm also very underweight due to digestive problems so my muscle mass is very low and she thinks that may add to the pain.

I hope you find your answers.

Mimi

Karen,
Thank you for your reply. It sure does help to know that others are going through simular things as I am. I have the osteoporosis the worst in my spine and hip so I feel the pain the wost in the spine but now the pain radiates down my legs so bad that it makes it hard to do daily things.I am never going to give up though.I have to many good years of life left to let this slow me down I just get fustrated.I am going July 2nd to see a Dr who does Physiatry. You Keep doing your very best and I wish you the very best.
Diane

My recent bone density testing shows 3.5 in the spine. I find if I have back pain I am able to put a regular belt on snugged up comfortable for support and it instantly makes the pain go away. I take it off after awhile and am free of pain. I also wear it if im going to do any lifting or bending. Hope this helps.

We all have aches and pains as we age. I went to an allergist and found that I have food intolerance to cane sugar (name brands not store brands which are beet sugar) and wheat. When I got off of those foods most all of my little health issues subsided. With the sugar intolerance it caused excessive urination among many other things. Frequent urination flushes the calcium out of the system. No doctor ever told me this when I reported the intolerances for 15 yrs on my Dr's history report upon visitation. I had to find this myself...this is a favorite site of mine:
