stopping plavix prior to colonscopy

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy in 10 days. I had 18 inches of my colon removed for diverticulosis 10 year ago. My new GI doctor wants to me stop my Plavix and aspirin for 5 days prior to the procedure. I have 3 DES stents in my LAD..and I'm very nervous about stopping it because I was told to take it for life. I do have a call into my cardiologist; but, wondered what the concensus is here. Thanks!!!

I have been stopped on my effient or Plavix several times for different surgeries. My cardio explained it to me like this. One week off of Effient or Plavix is safe, it is when you go into a second or third week or longer that the danger increases for you to have issues. But one week off holds hardly any increase in danger and its benefits are large enough to outweigh any risks for 1 week off, but he firmly told me to immediately start it back up immediately after the procedure.

Hope this calms your fears and concerns:)

I was taken off of Plavix for 5 days before a uterine abalation and had no problems. That was back in 2006 and about 2 months after I got my 2nd stent. I checked with my cardiologist and he said it would be okay as long as I reported any chest pain to his office and went straight to the ER for anything sudden or severe. I am also a "lifer" for Plavix.

You shouldn't have any problems. Hope all goes well -

Think of it this way, you are in far more danger of serious bleeding from a procedure like colonoscopy than you would be from possible clotting in that time period.

My cardiologist REFUSED to let me stop Plavix within the first year of my stent. So they could not do colonoscopy. My gastro asked the cardiologist and he said NO!!! How long ago were the stents???

It will be two years March 2012.

I've had three colonoscopies, and never had any trouble until this last one in 2010. I woke up about half way through the procedure, and you know, it was really uncomfortable. The first thing I said was "OUCH"! I wish the doctor would have put me right back to sleep, but he didn't so I stayed awake for the rest of it. So tell your doctor if you wake up to put you right back out.

I had a colonsocopy last year and cardiologist and GP would not let me stop Plavix. GI did the procedure but told me that if they found anything, they would not be able to remove any polyps at that time. I would have to come back in after stopping the Plavix and aspirin. Thankfully all was clear! But just before they put me under, the GI said "I really don't like doing these when someone is on Plavix." I thought -what a great time to tell me that!

I am required to have colonoscopies every 3 years...thankfully I've never been awake during the procedure or experienced any pain.

I am on Plavix for life also. I have two drug aluting stents in my LAD - placed two years after triple bypass. I have had to stop Plavix several times for surgeries. My cardiologist was fine with it (stopping for 1 week), but only after that first year was over. You said you are two years out, so you should be fine. Like Yarnkitty said. Also like Beth356, I had a similar situation during the first year after stenting and got the same message from my GI about not being able to do any "corrective action" because I was on the Plavix and would need to return when off of it. Likewise, all was okay so I was lucky. My GI said the same thing about not likeing to do them when someone is on Plavix - maybe they should just not comment until we are "out" :) Maybe Beth356 and I had the same GI.

You ladies are wonderful!! How soon after the procedure, were you able to start the Plavix back??

I went back on it day after my procedure (endometrial abalation).

My doctor took me off of Plavix after about a year because I wasn't having any big problems, no heart pain, etc. All of these guys seem to differ on how long, how much - no one has the same thing. I still take a baby aspirin and natural products, fish oil, but have awful cholesterol counts because I can't take the statins. I think most of this depends on your physician - don't be worried. You'll survive without it!!!!! and probably feel better.

My husband has been on coumadin for years due to his heart being out of rhythm. He came off of it for 3 days, not 5 as the Gastro dr suggested prior to his colonoscopy. Cardio said 3 days only. He did fine, they did remove some polyps. He went back on his meds that evening. I realize coumadin is a blood thinner, different from Plavix. But anyone having surgery has to come off of blood thinners, aspirin, etc. to prevent serious bleeding. I was told in surgery doctors/nurses use other blood thinners in hospital after some procedures. I had "lovenox" ?? after bypass surgery and it was shots that left me black and blue. You could ask the gastro dr/cardio doc if you could come off 3 days only, not 5. I was told that a blood clot takes 48 hours to develop. don't know if that's true but a cardio doc told me that. You will do fine and I pray you get good results. I guess if they find a polyp and can't remove it then, you can go off the Plavix/aspirin a few days and go back for the procedure. But that means drinking that yucky stuff twice I guess! Best of luck to you. Barb

Thanks Barb... I asked my cardiologist about being off fewer days and she says I'll be fine with the fine. GI wants 5...no discussion.

After so many positive comments, I feel confident it should be fine. Just hate the prep :'-(

Prep is awful. Hate it! I went back on my Plavix that night. (I take it at night.)

Thanks! Tomorrow is prep day :-/ I take my Plavix at night, also. I'll post whether I'm allowed to start it back Monday evening.

My colonoscopy went well...no polyps (just diverticulosis). Had been been back on Plavix for 5 days when a I had another cardiac episode Friday night. My blood pressure which is generally 90/60, heart rate about 78 went to 153/84, heart rate went to 132 with irregular beats, it always begins with a headache. I was sedentary (always am) when these events happy. Had pain under left shoulder blade.
I took Ativan first, then a nitro which dropped blood pressure. It took almost 45 minutes to get my heart back in rhythm. I choose not to go to the hospital (they always want to do another heart cath- which would be #8). On Saturday I was exhausted; but my heart rate stayed around 55 all day. Usually I have the exhaustion; but not the low heart rate. Today, I'm still a little tired, B/P a little elevated for me at 124/73,heart rate in 70's. I will be calling my cardiac doc tomorrow. I just didn't not want to deal our small town emergency room on a weekend and a Friday the 13th :-/

The low heart rate on Saturday has me most concerned, as that has NEVER happened. Any comments, ladies?
