My husband, Janne, sustained a spinal cord injury in
August 2006 while we were living in Southern
California. We decided to move to Louisville, KY and
attend the Frazier Rehabilitation Institute for his
inpatient rehabilitation program. We had a wonderful
and productive experience at Frazier, but after being
away from home for a year we were ready to resume our life back home. When we began researching facilities in the area that Janne could continue his healthy lifestyle of an activity-based exercise routine, we had no options that we felt would challenge him as
much as Frazier did. So, we decided instead of just
re-creating the model for Janne, we sought to build
something bigger and help more people in our
situation. That need grew into NextStep Fitness
(www.nextstepfitness.org).

The focus of the facility is on continued wellness for
individuals post discharge from a formal
rehabilitation center. We are mainly focusing on SCI,
stroke, and MS clients at this time, but are willing
to evaluate others. At NextStep Fitness, our primary
goals are to:
* Build community-based physical fitness facilities
for the physically challenged that are affordable for
the client
* Provide client-focused, activity-based fitness
programs developed hand in hand with the client,
focusing specifically on each individual's needs
while striving to improve levels of independence
and increase quality of life
* Apply state-of-the-art research based training
techniques to our inclusive gym environment
* Work a sustainable model which is able to be
replicated across the country and help many more
people with physical disabilities and their families
continue a healthy lifestyle

NextStep, in partnership with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation's NeuroRecovery Network(NRN), is proud to be the first of two community based settings to offer Locomotor Training(LT) in the country. Using a body-weight supported treadmill and manual assistance this type of intervention has emerged as having the greatest potential to help those with gait impairments enhance their locomotor skills and potential walking ability. Our LT staff has been trained by members of the NRN's team.

Our center is designed to have something for everyone and our memberships allow you to tailor your workouts to your desire and financial capability. We have simple gym memberships that allow you use of the weight and cardio vascular equipment, FES cycle memberships, 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 guided exercise programs, and Locomotor memberships. Each client, no matter which program they choose, will have a full evaluation by our staff, which will include a Physical Therapist, and our staff will put together a fitness program for you and monitor your progress. We do not accept insurance, but should you want to try to submit for reimbursement we will do our best to help provide you with the information you may need to present.

Our facility runs at a loss each year to allow our
clients the opportunity to keep up their exercise
programs without breaking the bank. Our labor
overhead all goes to staff that are hands-on with
clients. Thank you for your time and please feel free
to visit our website(www.nextstepfitness.org), stop in
for a visit, or call the facility to chat:

Hello, I am so excited about your program. I am starting a support group in our area and had this same idea for us to put together here in Charlotte. But now we do not need to recreate the wheel. Please respond to this message as I want to know more about how you did this and how we can work with the foundation too.

Thank you so much

Jake and Jane Osborne

Hello Jake and Jane. Thanks for reading about us. It was not an easy feat. I will tell you that it took us about $1m to get everything up and running for 1 year. It might take less in your area given that lease costs and labor will be less. We have priced our memberships at a fraction of what it actually costs us so we also run at about a $400k per year loss. My husband and I do not take any salary from the gym either. It took a lot of fundraising and will continue to take a lot of fundraising to keep our efforts alive. I don't want to discourage you, as it is absolutely do-able, but I want to let you know realistically what it took us. We currently receive no funds from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, it is purely an intellectual partnership, but hopefully that will change in the next year or so.

We started with our relationship with the NeuroRecovery Network and built out the activity-based exercise programs and protocols with that team and while we were negotiating that we began looking to lease space and what type of equipment we would need and want. Before you do all of that though, you will need to make sure you have your funds in hand as many places will not lease to you if you don't. You also need to get a good law firm to do all of your non-profit legal filings for free...most all law firms have to provide pro-bono hours and many love to do this type of work. You must get heavily knowledgeable about the employer laws in your state. It will be a huge driver in the amount of your insurance will cost and what type and how much you will need/want.

There is a lot of work to do, but it is all worth it! You must make sure if you are not particularly good at some of the things I mentioned above that you surround yourselves with people that do. My sister was able to help us with a lot of the legwork as she is excellent at project management and master negotiator. Our lawyers were fantastic too and provided us with excellent guidance and many, many hours of help and continue to.

There is much more to talk about and if you are still interested, please reach out to me and maybe we can do a phone call, which would be easiest. We are totally willing to share everything with you about how we went about this. Thanks and we hope you can do it! -Susan
