I was told that I had 4 months to live in October of 2006 by an Oncologist who was later asked to retire early. I was diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC and still have it. My tumors are gone or smaller with the various treatments I have had.
Get another opinion.

I agree with Richard, get another opinion. I have never been able to figure out how a doctor can give us an expiration date, because I don't know of anyone who has one stamped on their bodies. I was dx Sept 2008, stage IV nsclc adenocarcinoma, had chemo and radiation and my PET scan last week shows everything shrinking. There are many success stories on this sight. Where there is life there is hope. You are in my prayers. Again get a second opinion.

I am sorry for the diagnosis. Your not thinking clearly when your first diagnosed..or at least I know I didn't. Maybe when your uncle has a minute or 2 to let this sink in he'll change his mind about treatment. You need to also try to get him to seek a 2nd opinion. You would be surprised at how the right fit of dr./patient can actually change your outlook.
thoughts and prayers are with you
God bless and gl

First, I'm sorry to hear another person is stricken by cancer. Second, I don't understand how some doctors feel the need to give you an expiration date. Glad the 3 months that they initially gave my mom turned into 9 years!

Perhaps your uncle is looking at treatments that were done many years ago.....people getting so sick from them etc. Treatments have changed so much now. Where once it was considered a death sentence to be told you had cancer, there is so much hope and good medicine out there to either get rid of it or keep it at bay so that you can live your life. It is the very same advancements in medicine that has put me in remission afterall!

I hope your uncle looks at this in a different light soon. Unfortunately with mindsets like that, they can be their own worst enemy.....

Hugs to you and your family.

Sorry to sound pushy, I just can't help trying to help others because I found something that has helped my husband tremendously. Check out postings from patriciad and see what she has to say. I am not the only one using the product and seeing results.

No matter what, God is in the plan and I will keep praying for you and your father and everyone else suffering with this debilitating condition.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE urge him to consider chemo as it is SO much better than it was in the past. I received my "death sentence" in January and started chemo in Feb (Carboplatin/Taxol/Avastin), and am already in remission! Not only that, but throughout chemo I never had anything worse that short-term flu-like symptoms -- all very manageable and liveable. Did I say I was dx Stage IV NSCLC (inoperable)? Stay positive and PRAY!!! It works at least some of the time!
