I'm sorry you've got a headache. I get migraines and yes, I did have some but not the first day but then again I do get quite a few.

Was a blood thinner (Coumadin) prescribed for you since you have a port? If so, my doctor doesn't want me taking the Excederin Migraine. So I can only take my Imitrex or Acetaphinomin. Also have to watch certain vitamins like E and Fish Oil. I do seem to have some sleeplessness for a few days. But the Benydryl is ok to take. Call your doctor and ask. It could be that you also had general anesthesia.... and depending on the meds given to put you out , a migraine isn't uncommon. I've definitely been there.
Blessings to you, take care and rest!

Hi Kimmer
Sorry to hear you feel so crappy. It was always the 3rd day for me because of the Neulasta shot i got the next day after chemo. However, it did pass, just in time to pull myself back together before the next round. You will get through this, it's horrible but it's saving your precious life. I always had insomnia for the first 2 days afterchemo because of the steroids they gave me during chemo, maybe ask your onc for a mild sedative just for those nights you just cannot sleep. And dear Kimmer, stop being so hard on yourself. You will get through this. Fear of the unknown (chemo) is over now that you have one treatment behind you. Now you know what to expect, and I hope it's not so scary anymore. Will be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way. Take care.

You poor kid! You probably feel so crummy because you had your port put in and your first chemo all in one day. General anthes. can give you a headache. I do get occasional migraines but did not get them during chemo. Day four was the worst for me but mainly because of fatigue and pains in my legs. Like MartyKay said be careful with all the meds your taking for your headache. Hope your headache settles down and you can get plenty of rest. Keep us posted.
Take care,
Anne

I'm surprised you're awake and upright with all the meds you took. Hope you're feeling better soon. Stick to the Tylenol (Ibuprofen and Excedrin both have aspirin and will thin your blood.... you don't want that.... the chemo is going to do a number on your platelets and doesn't need any help).

What a rough and scary start! I am so sorry! ... I have to agree with the other ladies... I think your responding more to anesthesia than chemo. When they do so much to your body all at once it is always hard to know who/what the culprit is. Hang in there, I bet you will be feeling much better very soon.

Oh thank u so much Marty. I have no earthly idea what to expect with this. I feel pretty awful - was hoping the day would be better, but i have no appetite and food tastes, UGH! Just taking it one day at a time, sister! :0) Thank u for caring, Marty!

Hi OC3 - thanks for your words of encouragement. Yep - i do need to take it one day at a time - my big big fear/wonder is when my hair is gonna fall out? I took two percocet a little while ago because i was starting to get awful muscle pain all over!

I refuse to suffer and am not afraid to take pills to kill the pain! :-)

Girl - if i have to rely on Tylenol for pain relief - i may as well go shoot myself. Tylenol for me is nothing more than a placebo!

I am taking percocet 5/325 for pain that was prescribed to me after my hysterectomy. I will scream loudly if i am in pain. Today it has been major leg almost bone pain. and the headache - well hopefully this dose of percocet i just took will kick that also. I am no hero - and i should not have to suffer. :-0

Hi Traci - i certainly hope so. although today is 2 days post chemo and Bard power port placement.

Thank u for the encouragement - you girls rock!! :-)

Sorry to hear it's not going so well Kimmer. I got my port a week ago, so I had healed a little before they accessed it. I was given Percocet to take when they put my port in. I only had to take two, then I was ok. I hope it gets better for you. Other than the port, how are your side effects from the chemo? Today was pretty rough for me, I slept on and off all day. I keep getting up and drinking fluids and stretching. Hang in there girl...we'll pull through this! One down, five more to go!

I'm pretty sure the percoset is a tylenol-based narcotic pain med so it should be okay. What you need to be careful of is the aspirin based as they will thin the blood.

I really don't understand why any doctors place a port and then use it so soon. I had major issues with the placement but even still I had a post-op visit a week later and my doctor still wanted me to wait a week for the chemo.

Did they give you a number to call if you have problems? If all those pain meds aren't helping the headache, I think it would be a good idea for you to call them.

I'm sorry you're so miserable! I hope you'll get a good night's sleep and feel better soon.

I dont know, girl - i just know my Power Port was installed in Nashville on THursday morning - they LEFT the access needle (Huber needle) in place - that way they didnt have to stick me again. I dont know the logistics of it - but hell - it worked! thats all i care about! :-)

Hi there Ginger! This was my first chemo session - on July 29th. Which one are you on? I take taxotere and carboplatin. This session took about 5 hours because there was a lot of teaching going on and more meds to inject (like steroids IV and benadryl, Emend etc.)

I felt sorta okay the day they put the port in; felt awful all day yesterday - a horrible headache (which some of the girls think it could be from anesthesia) - i have no clue.

I woke this morning feeling decent; had a bowl of mini wheats, and laid down because i was tired. after i woke up from my power nap (LOL - yeah right - woo woo what power! LOL) i found i had another headache and creeping up on me body and bone pain. I didnt want it to be out of control so i took my percocet left over from my hysterectomy.

I am not a martyr and will scream loudly if i am in pain. LOL! I even got an RX for some EMLA cream to put on my port area 30 minutes before i get stuck for my blood draws and chemo access. Talk about a wimp! But im entitled - LOL! How are things going for you, Ginger?

Hi borderline! Sometimes i feel like im on the Borderline! LOL - of jumping off the cliff! Just kidding.
But all i can say is it concerns me that feeling so bad after only 1 chemo session- hows it gonna be by the time #6 rolls around? Argh!

Headache is manageable now with the percocet. Nausea is under control. I am some concernedabout tomorrow as i am out of Emend. Those suckers are 100 dollars a pill! They gave me an IV infusion of it before my chemo; and a free sample pack for day 2 and day 3. I dont do nausea well at all..... so we will see what tomorrow brings. I just love this website and all you ladies are inspiring me to get through this!

Much love, Kim

Hi Kim. I wanted to address the food issue. I remember that so well. It seemed like everything, including water, tasted like metal, like licking the side of a battle ship. - Slight exaggeration, but only slight :).
My sweet husband used to make pancakes for me, and he would put a little bit of vanilla extract in the batter. And for some reason, that tasted sooo good at times when I was so hungry but everything else tasted terrible. Give it a try, and I hope you like it.
Blessings and grace and remember, this isn't fun, but it is do-able. So just do it.
And the brain is a remarkable thing. I can remember a day or two after a treatment I would be telling people that I just can't do this any more, I wasn't going to have any more treatments. Then when it was time to have another treatment, there I was, back at the dr. office ready to go.
Hang in there, and my hope and wish for you is that you will be more than a survivor, you will be a thriver.
And now I am anxious to read what you have posted about day two :)

Sorry to hear it hit you the day after. It was always the second day for me but never really life altering. Hopefully the excedrin worked. I get the head aches the second now on Avastin and Excedrin always works for those. I usually take a prescrip strength Motrin every day for the first week just because I usually feel draggy.
Good luck, stay strong and get lots of rest, drink lots of water :)

I had my port put in then 2 days later had my first treatment. I had the same experience as you. TERRIBLE headache and just achy all over. But with the next treatment, I didn't feel nearly has bad right away. It was a few days later that it hit. Still had a lot of headaches though. They felt like a sinus headache but there was no way to relieve it. Good luck with your treatments. With each treatment and with each person, there are always some surprises! As we all say, just take it one day at a time and listen to your body.

My hair fell out on day 13 after treatment.

Take care my friend,
Sonya

Chemo gave me a headache too. You might want to ask your doctor to help with the headache. That's a lot of medication. Hope your future chemos go better!
