You hang in there, this is just a phase and it will pass, the hair will grow back, and this treatment will end, consider it going in like a creepy little caterpillar and coming out a beautiful butterfly, that was my cancer mantra, the thought of the butterfly is what I kept in mind during treatment. I only had to do radiation, no chemo, but know many who have, and you will survive this, keep your spirits up, you are more than your hair and outside looks, its the inside that is harder to keep beautiful, so just concentrate on that, lots of positive thinking and most of all be happy to be alive, even if right now it does not feel like a gift, it is you will be a survivor with the right attitude about this.

Good luck

Kimi,
Can I ask, what is your condition? I am losing lots of hair, but I think it is due to severe anemia as that is what caused it a year ago. After IV treatments, it stopped coming out. Anemia can cause hair loss. Have they checked you? I am also being tested for lupus b/c I am swelling, other blood work is askew. I also have migraines, asthma, allergies, stomach troubles and an unidentified neuropathy.
Your hair will grow back. If it is due to medication, once you get it out of your system, I am sure it will reverse.

Hi Kimi, I went through the hair thinning too on Cellcept. I thought I would need a wig and as soon as my neph starting cutting back on the Cellcept, the hair loss decreased. I have been off Cellcept for about
a year and my hair is really thick again. In fact, I think I have more hair than before. Only, my hair was always straight and it came back curly. I like it! My husband said he never knew women were so crazy about their hair. I think the worst part of this whole FSGS thing was my hair. The prednisone cooks it so it looks like old hay and the Cellcept makes it fall out. This will pass and everything will get back to almost normal.

Have always had a lot of hair.... gone thru losing most of it twice. Once years ago when I was given a Rx for Depression, lost 2/3 that go round. Dermatologist recommended Biotin and sure enough, it worked. So much so the ladies from the beauty shop, the ones who had gotten to the point they didn't even want to touch my hair, started calling me at home after my hair returned asking: what is that stuff you used that got all your hair back, so and so is here and we wanted to tell her about it.

The second hair loss was when I was taking 40 mg Prednisone daily just last year. Used the Biotin and dosage is now 15 mg daily. Hair returned and not losing any at present time. The bathroom floor is soooo much cleaner, use 1/2 the swiffter cloths!!!

Biotin is a OTC dietary supplement found at local drug and grocery stories.

May want to call your doctor for his approval just to be safe. Let me know if you need more info.

Take Care, OneD

I have been on 80 mg prednisone since May and before that had tried to taper the prednisone but the active eye lesions always flared again. I take the prednisone with a glass of milk and have not had the stomach upsets.

Hi OneD, biotin is really good stuff. I had not thought about checking with the neph on this. I give it to my horses because it helps their hoof walls. My husband takes it for his nails as they tend to split. My neph said it was the cellcept that caused my hair to thin but I guess the pred does it too. I know the pred really cooks your hair. My hair looked like a hay stack and now I have had most of that cut out so my hair is finally looking healthy again. Thanks for the boitin tip. I will check with my neph as I am not suppose to take anything without his approval.

Hi Kimikiwi, how are you doing now with the hair loss? It has been about 4 months since you posted. I would be encouraged by an update. Have experienced about a 40% hair loss recently, myself. The amount that comes out daily continues to surprise and alarm me. Been on and off of Prednisone for 1 1/2 years, however, the last 5 months at high dosages. It began to fall out, as well as become extremely dry and brittle at the same time I started weaning the Prednisone over the last 4 weeks. Would love to hear encouraging advice from all of you who have walked this tireless road. Prednisone is bittersweet... the miracle of the drug is sweet, but the side effects are ever so bitter. Last week's bone scan gave an osteoporosis diagnosis from the Prednisone, at 48 y.o. :o( I would encourage everyone to supplement with Vit D and Calcium when taking this drug. Unfortunately I was not aware of this side effect, nor did my doctor recommend the supplmentation. The Prednisone prescription should automatically come with this supplementation. HAIR.... Any suggestions for my hair, in addition to the "Biotin" which I read about, would be so appreciated.

My hair has fallen out too! I have always had such thick hair and it is so upsetting to see it getting so thin. I have Mininmal change disease and am currently experiencing a relapse so my hair is really falling out and as of yet my current dosage of cyclosporine has not been increased and I have not been put back on prednisone. After my last relapse in May of 2008 my hair fell out so much, but it did stop after awhile. I know how upsetting it is since it is just another side effect to add to everything else we have to experience on these prescriptions.
