What is your diagnosis? I started experiencing weight gain on 20 mg after about 1 month. No other side effects as yet.

I'd been feeling really unwell and had no appetite before I went on Prednisone. Within 5-6 hours my stomach was rumbling. I had trouble falling asleep and was quite hungry all the time. I was only on it for 1 month.

I have been on prednisone since April, for treatment of a type of autoimmune encephalopathy (Steroid Responsive Encephalopathy Associated with thyroiditis, formerly known as Hashimoto's Encephalopathy).

I had high dose steroids in the hospital (1000 mg a day for 5 days), then came home on oral prednisone.

So I started in April at 60 mg a day, slowly tapering down, and for the last month I have been at 30 mg a day.

As far as symptoms go, I have not gained any weight. My appetite is similar to what it was before prednisone. Initially I had some difficulty sleeping, but that passed within a few days. I do have some heartburn occasionally, and my face has gotten rounder. Those appear to be my only symptoms.

Hi
I have been on Prednisone for almost a year was on 40 mg per day for several months before eventually tapering down to 15mg per day which I am stuck at. I take a catalogue of other medicines but know that Prednisone is the one medication that has effected me the most. I was warned when in hospital that this is not a nice med and that the side effects are quite drastic.

Through being very diligant about what goes into my mouth I have managed only to put on 20lbs, and I am strict but unfortuantely the classic side effects have shown themselve over the past two months. I know have what they call "moon face" and "torso obesity". I look like Mrs Potato Head from Toy Story lol. (I must point out that I am unable to walk very far and my mobility is impaired so no exercise)

I think the idea is that Prednisone is only ordinairily used in the short term but unfortunately on this board, Auto Immune, is seems to be used for much longer lengths of time.

Good Luck
Sarah

I have been on prednisone for 9 months...started at 50 mg per day and now have tapered to just 2mg per day. I am definately not symptom free ie stiffness and pain but it is manageable and gets me through the day. Before I took the prednisone I lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks but my appetite increased after a couple of months and I am back at my normal weight. I am paranoid about gaining weight so am very careful about my diet most of the time. No other symptoms to speak of but at this low dose I dont expect any. Good luck!

I have been on Medrol, a steroid a little stronger than prednisone, for 26 years. It took 4 months before I started to put on weight then bang it came on. My appetite was insatiable; I never felt full. I became cushionoid. The moon face, the bufflao hump and the big belly. This is a side effect and as with all side effects not everybody gets them. Maybe you will luck out. Other things to watch out for are increased eye pressure, cataracts, and bone thinning. I am sure there are more, but these are the ones I ran into.

Thanks Iodine65. you have just answered a question I had.

Before falling ill I had a very small tattoo on my lower neck in memory of my grandmother whichis now on the top of what we in te UK call a widows hump... hadnt ever considered that it would be attached to the meds. Grrrrrr.....

I've been on prednisone for 15 months, on doses ranging from 5 mg to 60 mg. When I was on high doses (30+), my prednisone symptoms were pretty wild and ranged from edema in ankles and feet to confusion to skin rashes to depression. Moon face, of course. I am one of the strange ones - I have lost 40 lbs since starting prednisone. I do have horrible eating frenzies, but for the most part have no appetite. On lower doses of prednisone I haven't reacted too badly to it. Still loss of appetite and depression, but not too bad. The prednisone is bad for my osteoperosis so I try to stay on as low a dose as possible. The moon face comes and goes, hair loss on head, hair growth on face are bothersome but not life changing. Best of luck to you.

I started out with 40 mg of prednisone, very slowly tapering down for 1 year. The worst side effect was insomnia, which I managed with ambien and xanax. I never gained weight, but lost pounds. My skin became very thin and bruised easily, did not worry too much about it. My biggest problem was depressed immunity, I somehow became infected with Microbacterium Avium Complex, or MAC. It took a year of triple antibiotic therapy to take care of that. So be very careful, keep up your general good health, stay away from people with infectious diseases. I started wearing disposable gloves when going shopping and kept up with my seasonal flu shots. I am doing fine now, but it certainly was a trip.

I have been on Prednisone for many years now with varying degrees of dosage, I just recently managed to decrease my dose to 10mg a day yahoo! Unfortunately if you'll be on/off long term you for sure want to take some precautions as I have had many of the side effects due to it. One is a compression fracture of my spine as Prednisone seriously drains the calcium from the bones so if you don't already begin taking Boniva or another medication that can help prevent this from happening nice thing about Boniva is you only have to take it once a month. I also suffer from the moon face and weight gain. My appetite seems to change all the time from ravenously hungry to barely there which is weird but ok. Of course for me one of the worst symptoms I have are the mood changes I haven't seen anyone talk about that at all but I have had periods of what I call my outbursts where I will be completely fine and then wham Dr. Jekyll Mr Hyde appears lol. of course again it changes depending on the dosage I'm on but it happens so I wanted to warn you since many Dr.'s seem to forget about this effect. But yeah you may have bursts of emotions both anger, crying, etc just out of the blue, sometimes I'm able to collect myself pretty quickly & realize ok its just the prednisone & other times I guess I just have to rant & get it out. Sleeping sometimes is also affected but again comes & goes.

I hope this helps & my prayers are with you, Teri

Someone mentioned mental changes. I guess I am a lucky, I became very euphoric and have stayed that way for 26 years. I guess if you are going to have a change that is a good one. I did read that if you have a mental illness steroids will make it worse. I also forgot to mention that on high doses I can't sleep. I have had migraines all my life and on high doses I don't have them, but when they lower the dose they come back.

Take your prednisone with food and take it early enough in the day to enjoy the benefit of it. Also, if I forget and take it too late in the day, it really affects my sleep in a negative way. So, I take my after I have eaten something in the morning, and before 3PM. Sometimes I break it up into 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 @ 1 or 2 PM. Just trying that split dose this week to see if it helps spread out the pain relief better.
After while prednisone thins out the skin and makes you bruise a lot easier and it moves our lady's fat around and you find that you don't have your padding where you're used to it and you get it in new and unusual places. It depends on the dose, and how long you've been on it. It gave me slightly bigger boobs, but also, no butt, and a bigger belly, all while I lost 10 pounds.
I am hoping to get my lungs well enough to restart methotrexate and wean off the Prednisone.
When my rheumy first wanted to start me on prednisone, I begged her not to, because I was afraid of the side effects. Now, I beg for bigger doses than she wants to put me on because it offers the best relief of my symptoms of all the things that I've tried so far.
All the best.

There is one other side effect you should be aware of: prednisone can cause ulcers. So, be sure to take it early in the day (with breakfast). As a precaustion, you should ask doctor should to prescribe something like Zantac.

It sounds like different bodies react really differently! I've been on doses ranging from 10mg to 1mg over six years, averaging around 5mg daily. Don't know if the relatively low dose is to do with it, but no moon face or weight gain and no mood swings, and sleep is just fine but for a couple of other unrelated problems. Instead of weight gain, I lost about 13 kilos at the start, was a walking skeleton, but have settled at 5kgs below my original weight, which is workable.
Skin definitely thinned out, but then I'm in my sixties and live mainly in the tropics so maybe that's why.

Hair loss, definitely. Quite severe. Never sure if that's the prednisone or the methotrexate – anyone know?

A recent addition to my woes is eczema. My docs insist its not a side effect of either of those drugs, but I've never had it in my life before. Anyone has eczema – red and itchy skin patches? Know whether the drugs bring it on?

Good luck, Juicyeeka. I reckon the benefits will outweigh the side effects.

I started on 60mg prednisone in August 2010 and gradually gained weight until I was able to taper down to 5mg/day in December 2010. (I was fortunate and only gained about 10lbs in total, possibly because I am also taking plaquenil which reduces appetite.) Since tapering down to 5mg, I've had to increase my dose five times with increased symptoms, but I haven't stayed on the high doses for more than a week or two at a time.

Prednisone has a lot of side effects... It made me moody (mostly sad/depressed, not manic), hungry (I ate every couple hours and planned my day around making sure I could get a snack), gave me crazy dreams (at moderate to high doses), gave me widespread acne (face, chest, neck, back, shoulders), reduced my bone density (osteopenia), and gave me a rounded (moon) face.

I have a love/hate relationship with prednisone... It helps me to feel better fairly quickly, but carries a lot of side effects. It can also increase the recurrence of my condition, pericarditis... A double-edged sword.

Potential side effects that I have not experienced are the stomach ulcers and the diabetes (though my blood sugar was elevated above ~5mg prednisone).

Several months into treatment, when I realized that this drug wasn't going away, I purchased the book "Coping with Prednisone." It helped me a lot, both in understanding the side effects, and in not feeling alone.
