When to take meds (Night or Day)

0 Recommendations

Question: Is it preferable to take certain meds at night, and certain in morning? I'm talking regular cardio meds, nothing obscure. Thank you.

Statin class of drugs ( such as Lipitor)work by causing the liver not to make cholesterol. The liver makes most of the cholesterol at night while you sleep. Thus you should take your statin drug at night.

well, Renate, I do appreciate that info since I went out and bought the other stuff. I'll change, thanks.

Also, Alamoowl, I went off the statin (Crestor) to see if my legs cramped less but will store that info.

Hi,
I am responding to gammacygnus' reply about the magnesium supplement.
A year ago I did some research on magnesium and found out that magnesium oxide is not the one to take --very little effect since the body does not seem to absorb it.--. Instead, I was told to take magnesium malate or citrate. Presently I take my magnesium in pouder form, it's called "Natural Calm" from the healthfood store, and it is supposed to be a highly absorbable formulation of ph-balanced magnesium cirate in ionic form.
Just thought I would share this info.

Statin drugs should be taken at bedtime.

Hi, A. I don't but my daughter can substantiate your info. Ah, a drug I don't take. How sweet!

Oh just remembered something else, if your taking thyroid medications they CANNOT be taken with anything else, one hour before a meal or 2 hrs after. I prefer to take mine right before I go to bed.

Im just on calcium, glucosamine/chond, cq-10, omega-3, and a multivitamin as far as supplements go. Im thinking about starting niacin but have to run it by the cardio first.

I did an analysis of when everyone took their meds and there was no consistency, which was sort of a releif: there are no right answers. I will take the advice posted here and read the med print outs to see what they recommend, and also see the pharmocologist at Columbia Pres (where I go for cardio). Thank you all for your responses, which happily went two pages. You're all so conscientious.

This is so great. I now have so much to research.

potassium replenishes just that, the potassium you lose with diaretics/water pills. My transplant team puts me on it off and on when my potassium levels are low. They're freakin' horse pills!! Take care/God bless-Kathy

Unfortunately I will whenever they get around to finding me a heart-after transplant I'll be on over 30 meds, yahoo, not looking forward to that! I'll be sitting swallowing pills all day, yummy breakfast, lunch, & dinner. Oh well, what can you do-hope they come in pretty colors at least-haha! Take care-Kathy

Check with either your doctor/nurse or pharmacist if you're really not sure. Different meds are more effective different times of the day, depends on the med/dose. That's what they are there for and you pay them for that, very well I might add. You take care & God bless-Kathy

Hi Kardia-Lisinopril is one of 5 meds I take in the morning and I don't usually have trouble. My b/p starts high in the am then gradually lowers throughout the day. The only time it really takes a nosedive is when I overdo & it can lower to sometimes 90/50 or 80/50 so then I just sit and chill. Take care-Kathy

Hi.I was diagnosed with osteopenia about 5 yrs ago. I take Fosamax Plus D, has 2800 IU of Vitamin D. The ciltracal has 500IU of Vitamin D as well as calcium and the multivitamins have 400 IU of Vitamin D, with all this vitamin D is to insure the calcuim is absorbed. I also drink nonfat milk, higher in calcium, then whole milk. I take Torsemide, a water pill, that causes the potassium, an electrolyte to be lost daily. So I have to replenish the potassium. The potassium supplements at 20mg, are prescribed by my cardiologist. Also take magnesium oxide that helps in contraction of muscles, essential for bones and teeth, recommended by the Dr. You need a combination of potassium, sodium and calcium(part of the 8 electrolytes) to help with the conduction of nerves and contractions of muscles. Since the heart is a muscle, the combination of the three electrolytes helps regulate heart rhythum. When my potassium is very low and I have the tendency to go into V-tach.

G, I think you hold the record. Can I ask about the bone pill and potassium, what they are? I can't rtake Boniva or calcium, etc, so I am interested.

I have list of 16 pills, take 2 pills every 8 hours,2 different ones every 12 hours and 3 potassium +3 water pills in the A.M. and 2 potassium + 2.5 water pills in the P.M. and a few more. I take one bone pill every Sunday. I have 2 that are non-prescribed citracal and muiltvitamin for women over 50. I take 16 pills in the A.M. to start. In all I take 24.5 pills daily. My own pharmacy.

Thank you, S, for this information.

That's about what I take.

Is anyone else here a pharmacy...I take 14 pills a day with 9 of them being supplements Ive been advised to take. Anyone else have a list a mile long?

I take my cholesterol and triglyceride medication at night because that the instructions on the prescription bottle (crestor and tricor). When I asked why, I was told that the cholesterol and triglycerides are made mostly during the night). My beta blocker (Toprol Xl) is prescribed to take 100 mg in the am and 50 mg at night. I take plavix and 81mg in the morning. So far, it seems to be working.
