Unusual symptoms in a 22-year-old?

0 Recommendations

Hi everyone -

I found this site via some Googling and so far it's been very helpful :-)

I came home last night around 11 PM after working an event and had some arrhythmia, which I attributed to some alcohol even though I only had two drinks. I get these fairly regularly, especially around PMS and my period, but I've never sought treatment for them. A few moments later, I had another heart flutter but this time it was accompanied by a quick pang in my upper back. Then I had some sweating (not too severe) and some breathing problems along with some burping (I did drink some last night and ate some spicy foods). I was so nervous about it that I only slept for four hours last night. I've had anxiety attacks before, especially when I was in college, but this was the first one in a while. I've got some chest discomfort now underneath my ribcage (like right in the center of my body, just above my diaphragm) but nothing too out of the ordinary. I do feel better after I burp, but would heartburn last this long?

I'm 22 (turning 23 shortly), work out three to five times a week, slightly overweight but I'm working on it, and I probably don't eat as well as I should and I've never smoked and only drink socially. I've got some family history of heart disease, but it's only been in adult males over 50. Should I get this checked out? The arrhythmia has never really bothered me before, just been sort of a nuisance, but I'm going out of town this weekend so peace of mind would be great.

Thanks!

When in doubt, get checked out. Heart disease starts forming in our teens. You say that your only family history of heart disease is in males over 50. Any male diagnosed with heart disease before age 55 is considered to have early onset heart disease (before 65 in women) which increases your risk of developing it at an early age. Your symptoms can all be attributed to a variety of things. Trust your body and your instincts and listen to what they are telling you.

Hi Maggie!
For your own peace of mind I'd get it checked out, you're so young but although in my opinion it's unlikely I guess it's not impossible.
Reading the posts on here can be scary stuff, when I first found this board I'd sometimes starting reading a post then I'd shut the whole thing down, it was just so frightening seeing all the things that could go wrong with my heart, my MI was bad enough!
It's such a difficult thing to diagnose, so many other simple things can mimic the symptoms, so if I was you I'd go to my doc so he can make a diagnosis.
Just try not to worry or panic okay?
Hugs, Lidia xx

Sweetie,
I had my 1st MI at 29. My 2nd @ 30 when I had to be revived on the angio table & sent for an emergency double bypass. My first active symptoms go back 3 years earlier so I would definitely get it checked out. Chances are its nothing at all. But on the chance that it is something getting it checked now may result in a small procedure or medication that can save you a heart attack with permanant tissue damage later.

On a depressing side note.. In my son's school, a 15 year old passed away 2 weeks ago from a heart attack. He had some sort of unknown congenital defect. And a 14 year old girl a couple of towns over died from a heart attack last week playing soccer. She has arrythmia problems in the past. Get it checked out!!!

Thanks so much everyone! I just got back from the ER (I have no primary care at the moment) and my EKG was normal other than a sinus arrhythmia, so I'm following up with a cardiologist ASAP. The doctor said that was probably causing the heart palpitations, which put me into an anxiety attack. Apparently my dad had the exact same symptoms after 9/11 and he has the arrhythmia too.

Thanks again for the reassurance!

Hi! I'm glad you got checked out. There are a number of things that can contribute it, and an arrythmia left untreated can just get worse. You probably had a combination going on. If you have a reflux problem it can cause some of the symptoms, but not likely the arrythmia. Hopefully they do a chest x-ray, because there are some rare disorders that will also cause arrythmias, and doctors don't alway pursue the causes. An cardio electrophysiologist consult would probably be helpful because they deal with the electrical part of your heart. Some of my problems go way back to when I was young. I'm pushing 69 now, so keep the faith. God's blessings! Great-gram
