The Beta Blocker Blues

I’m all tired out, I feel like hell, I’m feelin’ kinda down,
My limbs feel real heavy and my face it wears a frown,
I wanna hit the couch now, and take a long, long snooze
Yup, I’m feeling kinda low, I got the beta blocker blues.

My heart is pumpin’ slow and my mind ain’t too quick neither,
I try to get some work done but I gotta take a breather,
I get on WomenHeart just to find someone to shmooze,
But she feels like garbage too: We got the beta blocker blues.

I take my beta blocker with a bunch of other meds,
I do it all in good faith ‘cause it’s what my doctor says,
I guess I’d better listen ‘cause I got a lot to lose,
There’s a lot worse that can happen than the beta blocker blues.

So ladies let me tell ya even though you feel dread
With each pill that you take, but it sure beats bein’ dead,
Feelin’ low and goin’ slow is an option I will choose,
I guess we’re stuck—it’s just our luck – with the beta blocker blues.

Bravo! Now you have to tell us what tune to sing it to.

My best,
Laura

You know, I just couldn't think of one, but I'm basically tone-deaf. (I used to "sing" to my kids when they were little but then they'd hear the song on a record and say, "oh, THAT'S what you were singing." And then laugh. So embarrassing.)

Hey Debs
It's past 1 AM and I am awake....because..... for any number of reasons and beta blockers I am sure plays a part in all this. Crash at 6:00PM from fatigue I can't fight and sleep for three hours... And now here I am on the Womenheart site after one in the morning. Well I don't have to be at work until 10AM so hopefully I can get some more sleep.

But reading your Beat Blocker Blues poem so worth it. I can just hear that blues guitar playing the riffs before each line.
Da...Dah-h-h-h...de...dah, Da.......Dah-h-h-h...de......dah

Boy did you make me smile...Thanks for your humor and very clever way with words. Ruth

You got talent !

I love it. You did a great job putting words to how we're feeling. :)

Awesome!! It is great to know that there are people who really understand!! I know what you mean about those kids who don't appreciate our singing ability. I think when I sang to my kids when they were little they fell asleep in self-defense!

hi all
sounds like a country song to me ha ha. you got talent and i know the feeling about singing to the kids mine didn't like it either but the grandkids hey they think i am a star ha ha so it works for me. take care all

Ruth,

Next time you see a doc, ask if you could try Lunesta. I began taking it a couple weeks ago because I had constant fatigue from waking nightly and then not being able to go back to sleep. It is not habit forming and doesn't leave me with that drugged feeling in the morning. I am still waking up nightly (last night was 4 times) but with this Lunesta I am able to go right back to sleep instead of my brain engaging. It might help get you off the computer at 1 AM.

Oh, the only side effect I have had is a sort of metallic taste in my mouth, which I have gotten used to and consider it a fair trade for a good nights rest.

My best,
Laura

PS Deb, it is definitely the blues... thanks again for writing our new theme song. I plan on printing this if its ok and giving it to everyone I know who is connected with heart disease and its treatment.

debs1, So its the beta blockers that makes me feel so ughhhhh...... Now I have something to send my daughter on how I feel, if you don't mind me copying your poem, I'll give you full credit. Who knows, you could become famous...... LOL! Have a great day! "K"

Hi Debs,

Your poem is great. You should send it to every cardiologist and have them give it out to all their heart patients. That way at least they would have a little warning what the meds do. I know none of my docs every explained the side effects of all my meds.

You have have added humor to what is not usually funny. It is good to laugh with each other and at ourselves.

Warm Regards,

Rose

Print it, sing it, rap it, use it however you like ... this is how I keep my sanity. Laughing beats crying. I am going to give a copy to my cardiac rehab nurse when I "graduate" at the end of the week.

Absolutely the best thing I've read all day. Thank you!

Deb,
I can almost rap this one but I still favor the blues. Your words tell me exactly why I insisted on getting off of the beta blocker after a month - I couldn't function!

Thanks for making our day,
Laura

Junimead,
I just went back and read your profile since you are a new face to me here - I am not at all familiar with brugada, but I know lots of women on this site do have ICD's. You may want to post your request(s) for info and any other stuff here in this site - it seems there is an expert for a little bit of everything here.

Take care,
Laura

Debs,

Thank you for that little ditty. It describes exactly how I feel. Now we need one for Ace Inhibitors.

Sue

Hi Back to You, Debs,
Love the song! Maybe we should send it to Susan Tedeschi to record.
So, that's why I feel so dragged out, like I could sleep for days, but do so only in 2-3 hour spurts waking up several times during the night... Could it be the 300mg of Toprol I take each day (along with 8 other meds)? Oh, but then, there are supposed to be no significant side effects, remember? You're right, though, it is far better than the alternative to not taking it. Thank God for the advancements in medication therapy for heart disease.
Oh, what a group we are!
Keep writing.
KJ

Debs,

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! :-)

KJ,
I just read your bio writeup where you wrote:

"I have yet to find anyone with whom I can talk, compare notes, and ease my concerns about the obstacles and uncertainties of day to day life with cardiomyopathy.
I need to know there are others to share and support me in my concern and open my mind to sharing common experiences."

YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE! yes, I meant to shout that because you are going to be amazed at the love and knowledge these women have to share. Welcome to the club.
Laura
