thining skin after bypass surgery

0 Recommendations

Has anyone experience thining skin since their bypass surgery? My surgery was April 2, 2008. The skin on my hands has become so thin. When I press my hands against something really firmly, I can cut through the skin. I was trying on a pair of jeans the other day at the store and the tag sliced open my hand. I am 45 years old, but feel like I have the skin of an 80 year old. Any ideas?

What meds are you on? Plavix is the one that gets me. I have been on it off and on since 2005. I was 41 when I had my triple bypass 12/30/07. They bypassed my stents and took me off it. Then I formed a blood clot in one of my new bypasses that caused a heart attack 17 days later. I have to take Plavix forever now. Statins and blood pressure meds - pretty much all heart meds can effect skin from what I understand. Also, bypass surgery can effect your hormones and cause some of us to go into perimenopause. I am dealing with that right now. I bruise if I brush up against something. Little scars all over that never showed before now stand out since my skin is so thin. If I go barefoot, the soles of my feet crack and bleed. I am careful handling anything since my skin breaks open so easily and thanks to the Plavix, I bleed forever. Check your meds and ask your doctor about perimenopause. My body thermostat changed the day of my bypass also. I can never get cool enough.

Best of luck and know that you are far from alone.

My body thermostat changed after my surgery, as well, but I'm much colder than I was before, not warmer! It has definitely helped with our air conditioning bill this summer! I'm comfortable whereas normally I'm so hot! I haven't noticed any changes in my skin, though.

It's very frustrating to have all these changes (little compared to the bypass) to your body. I haven't experienced thinner skin but my skin is now drier. The thing I have really noticed is that I am getting broken veins on my face and legs. All these medications are wreaking havoc on my body but are a small price to pay.
