Strange neck annoyance very annoying

I am 2 weeks 5 days postop and know I have a long ways to go with healing but have a strange neck feeling that is very annoying. Best way I can describe it is feels like a pulling sensation in the area between my carotid artery and thyroid on front lower left side of neck. Using a cold wet washcloth helps a little and seems it gets worse if I'm looking down such as typing with kindle in lap. Had the same thing when I first got home from surgery and got better now worse again. At first I thought it was from pike line that had been in neck but opposite side. Has anyone else had this before that can tell me what I can do to help and how long this will last? Soooo annoying and odd feeling. Please help!

I have no clue but my own neck causes a lot of strange and some painful issues. Strains and nerve pains from a bad spine cause pains that radiate to different areas.

Ask your doctor, maybe he knows exactly what this is caused by.

Hi Aundy,

I had that pulling sensation in my neck off and on for quite some time. From what I understand it is from our sternums being cut and the strange positions they had to put us in during our long surgeries. It's only been a little over two weeks since your surgery . Hang in there it will go away and get better with time. Have you had your follow up appointments yet with your surgeon and cardiologist? You can certainly bring this up with them when you see them. Also be sure to go to cardiac rehab it will help you tremendously. Be aware that you will have all kinds of strange sensations as your chest nerves and muscles heal and come alive again. Take care of yourself and don't rush things. Shamrock

Hi there: I had weird pulsing and throbbing in my carotid neck area into the top of my throat (plus a lot of swelling at the very top of my sternum) for months after my OHS for mitral valve repair. It takes awhile for our bodies to get back to normal after such an invasion to our bodies. I do have to tell you that it takes a good year to get back to feeling normal again. Before that I would have a good day and then a string of bad days, which were very frustrating. And there would be a different type of pain or numbness popping up every day. I had patches of numbness in various part of my chest where nerves had been cut and then different kind of stabbing pains in my sternum and then behind of right shoulder-blade. It just takes a very long time to heal from an incredibly invasive surgery like OHS and your heart needs to adjust and your body just needs to regenerate a lot of parts. And the longer you are under (in my case 5 hours) the longer it takes to heal. Just hang in there, it does get better. But, you need to keep walking, stretching and keeping a positive attitude. Cardiac rehab helps push you along safely. Just keep putting warm compresses on the area and it will resolve--it's like a very bad muscle strain brought on by being positioned in an unnatural position. I wish you a speedy recovery--Hugs. --PG
