Thanks so much, Nanabear. I've spoken with a couple of attorneys in my town, and each has a different method of dealing with SS. Your advice is very helpful - I appreciate it, and will use your information as I go forward with this process.
I hope you are enjoying your days and that your ill health symptoms are manageable. Sounds like you are dealing with an awful lot.
Take care.......
I worked for National City of Pa when I had my surgery I went on their disability at that time when after 6 monthes I couldn't go back to work they set me up with SS attys Bassett & Assoc in Columbia Mo-I have since found out it doesn't matter which attys you use You do not pay them SS does Call an atty that specializes in SS They know what they are doing and how to deal with all the paperwork Binder & Binder is one I see advertised a lot on TV.They also can tell you what your chances are of being approved. Good Luck
It was interesting to learn about the various experiences you ladies had with respect to SS disability. After 2-1/2 years of angina, spasms, stents and many hospitalizations, all due to my CHD and microvascular disease, I finally quit my job about a year ago. Why I didn't apply for disability while working is still a mystery. I guess I was one of these "duty first, then me" people, which clearly damaged my health. I have been advised by several people, including my doctor, to apply for social security disability, but I am a bit intimidated by the process. Were you? I was also advised to go through the process with an attorney. Did any of you secure the services of an attorney, or did you use the resources of Social Security? Any advice you have would be really helpful.
Thank you so much for providing valuable insight into the chasm of a government program!

I am surprised they told you at the hearing. they send you a letter months later. I applied August 23, 2006, have been waiting for the hearing when I received a letter stating after further review of your case, you are approved due to my cardiomyopathy. Mine is pretty severe with many hospitalizations for chf. I haven't worked since March 2006 and it took them 3 years to approve me for the same information they already had. Amazing. It is my understanding that our cases will be handled slightly differently because yours was with a hearing and mine was without. For the last week I have been receiving pieces of what I call the puzzle. I guess everything will make since soon enough. But still no money. My letter of approval was dated June 19, 2009.
Good luck and stay in touch.

I haven't received any mail The judgement was made at my hearing before I left the judge granted it Just have to be patient and wait now I guess.I have only been waiting since 11/06 when I first applied. My disability is based on a combination of things-CAD,COPD,GERD,ARTHRITIS, and ANEMIA.Until the hearing I was told I could go back to work even with my oxygen 24/7 but the Occupational Therapist told the judge I had over a 90% chance no one would hire me with oxygen.I was told my age was against me when I first applied-I was only 50 the closer to 55 you are the more likely you are to be okayed for SSD It also depends on where you live and who the judge is.Like everything else its a crapshoot.
Hi there. I too just received approval for disability. Seems every day I get another piece of mail like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, but I haven't pieced it all together yet. Would love to stay in touch and compare notes as we go through this.

Sorry to be so dense - what are the circumstances for Social Security Diability designation? AlaskaGirl
MINE TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS, DON'T WORRY-HARD PART IS OVER. TAKE CARE, KATHY
Thank You for your info. I wasn't aware of the Savings versus Checking point and I knew about taxes but didn't know they would withhold from the back pay. Thanks again.
I started getting my disability 5 months after I applied. I live in Va. and they rate U on a scale of how severe U are. I got my back pay with my first check. Each state handels it differently even though it is a federal program. The key is getting the doctors to move the paper work off their desks quicky and forwarding it to the proper people. Hope this helps.
It can take an average of 4-6 weeks before you get your first payment and back pay. Please be sure to check out your withholdings - too many are either not aware that you have to pay taxes, or don't realize how much it will be, especially for the back pay if it took a while to get approved. A quick piece of advice: Have the funds directly deposited to a SAVINGS account - if it goes into checking, and for any reason SS decides to review your case and thinks you may have recieved too much, they can pull your funds from your checking account, but not from a savings account. Also, be aware that you can still earn some supplemental income as long as it stays below a certain level (Usually below $600 - $900/month depepending on your circumstances). If you do earn a 'windfall' amount over that limit on a one time basis, you only need to notify your SS rep. as soon as possible, preferably even before you get paid, and document the circumstances. Also, be aware that you will come up for review at least every other year where you have to justify your continued disability; so don't worry that they are 'coming after you' for some reason.
