I am 31 years old and have been experincing chest discomfort and palpatations. I also have some tingling in my fingers. The discomfort is not painful, just "there" Also, I have suffered from migraines for awhile and notice they are more frequent. I went to my family doctor and she ordered Cholesterol screen, thyroid panel, and CBC. No EKG or chest x-ray. I have taken my blood pressure the last few days and it is elevated, but I am not sure if it is because I am worrying. My father had a heart attack at 39, my older brother has been on blood pressure meds since he was 28. I feel like I am getting blown off. My mother had me call my father's cardiologist. I couldn't get in with him or his partners until 10 days from now. I feel like something is not right. Did anyone else have symptoms like this at a young age?

Hi Brash, I've just seen that you joined us yesterday so welcome! Listen to your gut instinct, if you feel something is not right and you are wrong then nothing is lost, you get peace of mind, if you're right then you get treatment, and also peace of mind! You have family history so of course you're worrying. Your symptoms are not unique to heart disease, that's what makes things difficult. You need a diagnosis, I'd like to say try not to worry and stay calm but you won't, you'll worry until you know, so find out as soon as you can.
I truly hope it's something simple quick and easy to fix, which is highly likely, so stay positive and stay in touch!
Hugs,
Lidia xx

Hi Brash welcome to this wonderful sight. I ditto what Lidia had to say. You had an intuition and it is wise to act on it.
I do deep slow breathing while trying to shut every thing else out when I get nervous about my health issues. It does help to calm me down. Maybe another call to you PCP to talk about how nervous you are to wait, maybe they can get you in sooner to the cardiologist.
Good luck. I will keep you in my thoughts and send positive thoughts your way. Keep us posted
Hugs
Martie

Hey, Brash, welcome, welcome, welcome. You're in the right place. Please listen to your intuition, Kiddo. You know yourself better than anyone else in the world. Keep searching - till you get someone who will listen. Don't worry about hurting anyone's feelings. You need answers and solutions. It's great that you've found us. AlaskaGirl

My dad has his first massive coronary at 37 and from there on lots of problems, sadly died at 57. Family history is huge! Hey by all means take your symptoms seriously and be your own best advocate. My symptoms weren't typical at all. My right hand tingled for a month, to the point I thought my family was sick of hearing me say it. I also used to get a tingle above my left ear. When I finally was allowed to stay in the hospital for 'real testing' they found my left descending artery was blocked. Enough for a stent. Surprise surprise. I was 47 years old and in good shape on the outside. All I heard was you're young and a women. Ummm... and that's why heart disease is our number one killer. Stand up for yourself... you and only you know your own body! We're all with you on this...

Thanks ladies,
I was able to get in this Friday with the cardiologist, so we will see what he says.

Just wondering how your appt went?

They did an EKG at the office which was basically normal. He scheduled me for an echo, exercise stress test, and 24 hour halter for this coming week. I will follow up with him the following week. My blood pressure was high there 147/90, but he said I am too young for high blood pressure. So he said we will monitor that too.

Why do doctor's say "you're too young"? I have had several coworkers on high blood pressure meds in their twenties. I was told I was too young at 50 to have AFib. My PCP told me that my occasional irregular heartbeat and palpitations (which started in my early 40's) were normal in perimenopaus, and nothing showed up on the EKG--ever. That is until I landed in the ER with AFib.

Listen to your body--the doctors don't know it as well as you do.

You might want to have your thyroid checked as well. The thyroid is key to many heart issues. If you are hypothyroid (low) that will be another item to get treatment for.

There is no such thing of being too young for high blood pressure. It may not be common but it happens. I had high blood pressure 29 years ago during my pregancy with twins. It never went away and was referred as benign hypertension. One of my 29 year old twins was diagnosed with hypertension at age 18 and he was athletic. His twin brother was diagnosed at about age 25. The 147/90 may have been a "white coat episode." It is quite common for patients to experience an elevated blood pressure during an office visit. After all look what you go through just to see the doctor.
