Program Overview/Statement of Need
Evidence shows that some patients fail to understand risk, which may adversely affect patient care. Led by a panel of key opinion leaders, this Continuing Medical Education program explains ways that physicians can communicate risk to their patients to help them make informed decisions. In addition, the program describes some methods to verify that patients understand risk information.
Learning Objectives
• Discuss how the FDA uses risk information to evaluate and approve new medications.
• Describe ways in which patients use risk information to make decisions.
• Explain basic biostatistical concepts including absolute risk, relative risk, attributable risk, odds ratios, and number needed to treat.
• Offer simplified numeric and non-numeric ways of describing risk, including methods appropriate to patients with low health literacy and low numeracy.
• Describe methods to verify that patients understand risk information.
