Prasugrel

I had an angioplasty last (no stent), a little over a year from my last stenting. My doctor believes that Plavix is not working for me and has prescribed a new blood thinner Prasugel. Becuase it is new, I'm unable to get documented personal exeriences off of the web. If anyone has been taken this drug and wish to share their experienc, I would be greatful. I want to know if its the wonder drug they say it is. My doctors are excited.

Plavix Pain Stent

I am on of the few people out there that is "Plavix resistant". When I had 3 MI's last August, the Cardio Dr believes that prasugrel saved my life as Plavix was doing nothing to help me and the first 2 stents completely clogged back up. I was started on prasugrel (Effient) after my 2nd heart cath and 3 more stents and have had no problems.

Hi Donna - I'm curious about why your doc suspects your Plavix is "not working" ? Symptoms?

XOXOXO

Hello Kennaerina,

After having shortness of breath and chest discomfort walking short distances, the doctor decided that I should have an angio given my medical and family history. It was determined that I indeed had blockage and I had the angioplasty to open the same diagonal branch that was stented a little over a year ago. The same exact location. He believes that I may be plavix resistant and said that Prasugrel is a stronger med and believes that it will work better for me. He has also upped my statin from 40mg to 80mg.

Yikes! That explains it. At this stage, you want to try whatever will slow down that plaque build up. I just had to go in for another angio because my cardiologist suspected 'stent failure' (don't you just love that terminology?) He says it's fairly common to see what they call the 'candy wrapper effect' in stent failure - obstructions starting at either end of the stent, closing the artery at either end like the twisted part of a wrapped candy.
GOOD LUCK!
XOXOXO

Wow, now I am wondering if my doc was wrong and should evaluate my Plavix. It has been 3 years since my first angio which they placed 4 stents. This past Sept I was having issues with walking again, short distances resulted in leg pain. They scheduled a dopplor then did another angio- went from zero blockage to 70% in one leg and 30% in other in 3 years. I demanded a check on my heart stent after and was told there wasn't a changed. I questioned if meds should be adjusted and was told not at this time, was told it is now genetics. I don't want to keep going through this every couple of years so now I'm wondering if I need to revisit this with my cardio or get another opinion. It seems the Plavis isn't working and that is why I was asking. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks, Theresa
