This should be checked out. As you said it is not normal. One thing you might do is start collecting data. Keep a log of your heart rates (and blood pressure if you have a monitor available) regularly at times throughout the day. At rest, before and after exercise, etc. Take not on your log of the times you have chest pain or shortness of breath. Have you talked to your parents about this? Maybe they can support you when you go to the doctor. You might need to see another doctor to be taken seriously, but sometimes representing with the same symptoms persisting and more data convinces a doctor to take you seriously. If your chest pain or shortness of breath worsens you should call EMS and go to an ER.

If you take oral contraceptives (birth control pills) I would be very concerned about your symptoms, especially if you also smoke. OC increase your chances of having blood clots and pulmonary embolus, more so if you smoke. PE is life threatening and must be treated at a hospital.

Hi Sierra! I was 39 and an athlete my entire life when i had my first heart event. No one believed my symptoms (nausea radiating in my chest & short of breath-which we now know is common women's symptoms). So i was also blown off and even told i had "panic disorder" after multiple trips to the Dr. PLEASE advocate for yourself with a different Dr!!! Where are you located-maybe one of us could make a rec? When i couldn't get a referral from my primary, i called my insurance company & they approved a stress test. good thing-i collapsed due to had a 99% blocke "widow maker" artery. only then, did i get a Cardiologist. Also, figuring out the "right" test for you is key, as certain tests only measure certain issues-blockages, rhythm problem, etc. Keep us posted so we can help! You are young and a lot of living to do!!! :o) Hug! Steph
