Not happy with metoprolol

Hi. I'm new to the board; I've been reading through many of the discussions, and can really identify.

I'm now 56, but have had palpitations (PVCs) for at least 35 years, and used to have relatively frequent SVT; I would occasionally have to find somewhere to lie down, as that was the only way the tachycardia would stop. For a while I got the "anxiety" diagnosis, but was finally diagnosed with mild mitral valve prolapse. I also had pretty high cholesterol, and have been on 40 mg. of zocor for several years, so that's pretty much under control. I had one stress test (not nuclear) about 5 years back, with evidently quite abnormal results, leading to a cardiac cath; all was normal, and my cardiologist was quite surprised, as he said my results generally indicated someone with significant blockages!

I also take 50 mg. of metoprolol; used to take the "real" Toprol XL, which seemed to control the crazy heartbeats, but I've not been happy with this generic; apparently the 50 mg dosage had been recalled, and I've had to split the 100 mg pills for several months now. I think that this somehow damages the time-release properties, as I've been noticing many more PVCs since I've had to do this. I think I'll insist on the real Toprol XL next time I see my cardiologist.

Has anyone else had issues with the metoprolol? I went years without giving the occasional PVC a second thought, but I seem to be very aware of them now - often 10 times/minute.

Glad to have found you!

That recall on the metroprol was in the early spring. I was on it too - I took 150 mg. daily.

When I called the doctor's office about the matter they changed my metroprol (Toprol XL) to Bisoprol Fum 10MG. I need to contact the doctor's office again because in July my insurance changed a little and I now have to purchase my meds through the mail or I will be charged regular prescription prices at a local pharmacy. I don't have a doctor's appointment until the end of December.

The only issue I have with these meds is weight gain.

Dear Newzie,

I think you are correct in that the metoprolol is not time released and, in your particular circumstances, I can see where that might definitely make a difference.

It's not a matter of getting your doctor to prescribe Toprol XL, but in getting your insurance company to approve it. You have to convince your doctor to go to bat for you and INSIST with the insurance co. that Toprol XL is of greater benefit to you.

May the Blessings Be!

I was put on Toprol XL and taken off of it several times. I was diagnosed with Prinzmetal's Angina/coronary artery spasms. My then cardio told me Toprol XL and can worsen and even cause artery spasms so he took me off of it. My next cardio disagreed and put me back on it about a month before my triple bypass surgery. 18 days after my surgery I had a heart attack caused by a combination of a blood clot and spasm in one of my new bypasses. This was my 4th cardiologist and he told me I cannot take Toprol XL in any form because of it's contributing factors to coronary artery spasms.

I had my calcium channel blocker upped after my MI and have had few problems in a little over a year and a half now.

That is my experience with Toprol XL.

Take care -

Dianna
