lower leg swelling after aortic valve replacement

0 Recommendations

Hi,
I had AVR on 8/25 and was toldI might have some lower leg edema post op. It's been weeks later and I still have the swelling and haven't been able to get down to my preoperative weight. I'm rapidly becoming depressed because my feet look like water pillows. The surgeon says walking will help and has also discontinued my lasix. Anyone else have the swelling - what helped relieve it and how long can I expect this to continue?????????????

Exercise Surgery Lasix Edema

Talk to your cardio about the lasix. I have a hard time figuring out why the surgeon would d/c it when you still have swelling. Also, while I personally hate these (I'm clausterphobic & they set it off... weird, I know!) , compression stockings do wonders for post surgical swelling. They help force the return that causes the lower leg swelling. Good Luck!!!

Elevating your legs when sitting and reducing your sodium intake may also help.

Hi, I had aortic valve re-placed June 1, 06, I still have edema daily and am on 60 mg, of lasix daily, I was told the more I moved around the more it would help me with edema. I know how hard it is to be active just coming out of surgery a little more than a month for you now, but walking does help. I use to walk up and down my hall in my house for 10 minutes each day , to get a little exercise .I did this for about 6 months, and then went back to the daily treadmill for 30 minutes a day. I still have swelling but the lasix helps. I cant believe the doc, took that away, you may ask you PCP doc. to give you the Lasix. Best of luck recovering from the surgery. I had a bovine valve put in 19mm. bi-cuspid. What kind did you have put in? Terri
