Interactive map--prevalence of heart disease and stroke in the US

0 Recommendations

Hi all,

I just found this on CNN's website; it's an interactive map of the US where you can click on it and get data for your state on heart disease deaths, stroke deaths, high blood pressure rates and high cholesterol rates. The figures are from 2006. I'm a Gen-X Internet-baby, I like clicky things, so I've been playing around with the map and thought others might like to see it too:

Of course, the stats aren't broken out by male and female, though. But if you click through to the "In Depth: Matters of the Heart" section, it goes right to an article about high cholesterol and women, and how a lot of women aren't aware that heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the US.

Hi Laura,

What a fun and scary map. eeeek!

I would like to permanently add 'and their doctors' to the quotation " how a lot of women aren't aware that heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the US."

as in....".. how a lot of women AND THEIR DOCTORS aren't aware that heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the US." That is the critical part of the picture consistently not making the news.....the fact that a woman can sit in a doctor's exam room all day long with a doctor who won't get anywhere close to referring her for cardiac testing. Our power only extends as far as getting ourselves to a medical facility. Beyond that, the power and responsibility for diagnosis resides within medical boundaries.

back to play with that cool map some more! I was suprised Virginia wasn't worse and then realized we have an enormous young military and university population stationed here year round to even things out a bit. Still, my area, Tidewater Virginia had a 37% mortality rate from all forms of heart disease in 2006 census.
