ICD induction necessary?

0 Recommendations

Hi there, I was just wondering if anybody with an ICD could tell me if they were receiving annual inductions- where they sedate you and put you into V-fib to make sure your ICD fires. I had it done a few months after my implant last year while I was still in Denver. Now I have moved to NY and my new cardiologist says he doesn't think this is needed, some dr's do it and some don't. I must mention that I did not like him much anyway as he barely paid any attention to me and I had to stop him from walking out the door after only two minutes with me and he basically dismissed me. Never mind I am a 27 year old with a diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis!!

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone here had any input or experience with these 'inductions'

thanks,
danamae

Wow, that sounds scary... um I've had my ICD for 1.5yrs and never had that done. I have an amazing cardiologist and go in for regular ICD check ups where they place a wand over my device and check for events and pace my heart etc but you are completely awake and its painless.. takes just a few min. I'm sure you probably have those done too. . Anyhow.. just thought I'd share my thoughts :o)

i have had my icd since aprilof 2008 an dteh only time they did that is when they put it in that would be scary i am monitered with a device at home and every three months i hook up to me and it will read and send info to my doc they say it reads every night and calls out about 2 am so i would check into that.i'm already nervous when they have to change the battery and that wount be for another 4 to 7 years depends on how many times i have to use it
good luck

hi danamae,

i received my first bi-vent pacer/icd in 2004 and have NEVER had that done. they do regular interrogations of the unit to make sure that it is working properly. i belong to 2 different groups for people with icd's and none of them have ever mentioned having that done "just to make sure it's working right". what a waste of battery life i would think.
what a relief to know that you don't have to go through that again.

good luck and take care

I've had my ICD for almost 6yrs and never had this done nor heard of it before now. As for myself, I go in the heart clinic every 3 months for a reading. From that reading they can detect 24/7 if I've had a small episode or how things are going. At my last reading (in December) it showed I'd only used 10% so still have battery life left, the technician said it would probably be December before replacement.

Thanks everyone! This has put my mind to rest a bit about this. I didn't get a very good impression of my dr and didn't know whether to trust him or not. I guess I could always ask the people at the ICD place too...but I really value a community like this where I can get a question like this answered so easily and from people actually dealing with these things!

Hi! I'll be another echo! I've had my ICD for nearly 3 years and have never had what you describe. I have a modem at home which I use to send in data once a week, then I see the cardiologist every 6 months for in-office interrogation. I would definately call the company which manufactures your ICD and see what they say. I do know that powering-up the device does use up battery faster. So, why do? Let us know what you find out. Hugs, laurali
