Heart disease and wine

Hi Ladies,

Just a thought for those of you who should be having a glass of wine daily, but don't care for the taste. There is a wine called Voulet that I recently found. It tastes like juice. It only has 5% alcohol. It doesn't have the taste that most wines have.

According to my cardiologist if your going to drink wine; make it red wine and one glass a day. I also read in Health magazine that grape juice gives you the same benefits as red wine. The thing I found about drinking grape juice vs wine is grape juice is very sweet. An inexpensive red wine from Trader Joe's is Charles Shaw only $1.99 and very good. You can also mix half red wine and half grape juice.

my friend had 3 stints put in yesterday and was told to only have white wine, not red.... any idea why? Does it interact with Plavix?

I thought red was good.

Organic wine is good also...

Everything I've read say's you shouldn't drink wine or any alcohol. It weakens are already weak hearts. I have trouble with this myself because I have always enjoyed good wine.

I was told no alcohol of any kind because of my heart failure. It would only weaken my heart even more. I have friends with high cholesterol who were told to have 1 glass of red a day. Supposedly it helps to open your blood vessels. I drink a few glasses of grape juice a week.

If you ever find out why, I would love to know as I am trying to drink a glass of wine every now and then but I do have stents.

Any good tips for non-alcoholic wines without sulfates?

there are sulfates in all wine.. I drink Organic wine as it does not seem to have the same effect.

A good, light wine that is on the sweeter side as opposed to dry wine is "Moscoto". It's very palatible for those who are not wine drinkers. AlaskaGirl

Hi AlaskaGirl, Yes, I agree. I, too, recently discoered that wine at our local Olive Garden. There are different producers of it. I especially enjoyed the Olive Garden brand. Alcohol content is low.

just a reminder...that if you have heart arrhythmia's...wine and other alcoholic may trigger arrhythmia. I am quoting from BioMed Central. One hundred randomly-selected patients with idiopathic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation filled in a structured questionnaires. Psychic stress was the most common factor triggering arrhythmia (54%), followed by physical exertion (42%), tiredness (41%) coffee (25%) and infections (22%). Thirty-four patients cited alcohol, 26 in the form of red wine, 16 as white wine and 26 as spirits. Among these 34, red wine and spirits produced significantly more episodes of arrhythmia than white wine (p = 0.01 and 0.005 respectively).

Who doesn't like the taste of wine??

If your heart disease is a plumbing problem (blockage) then a glass of red wine is good for you.

However, if you have CHF it is an electrical problem and no wine is allowed. This is what my heart specialist told me. Every once in awhile I cheat and take a taste of wine.

My favorite wine is a Michigan wine. Grand Traverse Sweet Red. This wine is wonderful, it is sweeter than most red wines.

I can't drink wine due to taking beta blockers and statins. Otherwise, I would love some!

Here's to us all!
Cheers! Lifting V8 and drinking! mmmmmm, best wine for me.. :-)
