My endo did panel of blood tests. My total Chol was 103, A1C was 4.9. He was so happy and said I was doing great. However I noticed on the copy he gave me my HDL is only 29. Any ideas on how to get that up?

Exercise Lipitor Aspirin Diabetes Plavix Niacin Pain Heart attack Crestor
Dear Barb,
Switch to Crestor.

I am on Lipitor 80 mg. Does Crestor do better?
My HDL was 28 for a long time. Crestor was the only statin that helped it rise up to 43 over time. HDL is very difficult to raise without exercise, moving the body. It is created as new muscle is created. Omega 3 fatty acids help too...salmon, blueberries. If you can stand those fish oil gel caps, it helps a lot to keep them in the freezer. That way they don't dissolve until they hit the intestines, which is where you want the absorption to take place anyway.
Crestor is also the most powerful anticoagulant in pill form. I can't take aspirin or Plavix so I am grateful for this.
take good care....your CHL numbers were terrific. It is the ratio that is important, so even just raising your HDL a few points will ease you into safer protection ranges.

I know I was so excited. When I had the 3 heart attacks in August, my A1C was 9.6 and it has dropped that much. BTW I am on 4 insulin shots a day but I am eating right. I just wish I could get the energy to exercise without chest pain.
Hi Barb,
Congrats on your test results. I had low hdl (38) but my most recent tests shows it is now 54. Below are some things that can help raise hdl:
Exercising at least 150 minutes per week can raise hdl 5-10 percent
If overweight, for each 6 lbs lost hdl can increase 1 mg.
Use monounsaturated fats (olive oil, canola oil) and eat 2-4 servings of omega 3 fish (salmon/tuna) or take fish oil tablets. Snack on nuts.
Medication-crestor and niacin can increase hdl
Quitting smoking can increase HDL by up to 10 percent
Drinking 1 alcohol drink (red wine) can increase hdl up to 10 percent. Check with doctor if you can have alcohol.

My HDL was 61 at the time of my heart attack. This is supposed to be an optimal number - but it didn't stop me from having an artery blocked. After the meds to lower the LDL, my HDL dropped to 40. I was concerned but my cardio explained it this way: He said to think of the HDL as the garbage man that removes the LDL from the body. If the LDL is where is should be, there is no garbage to take out so the HDL isn't as important. He is fine with my 40 since the LDL is where it should be.
