Gaining Weight

0 Recommendations

I had lost 50 pounds since I was diagnosed with CHF last November. When they put in my stent in May they changed and added a bunch of meds to the ones I already take. Since that time, I have been gaining weight back. Do any of these medicines have a side affect of weight gain?

What were the names of the medications?

Which meds are you on? If you're on a beta blocker, like metoprolol, gradual weight gain can be one of the side effects, alas. :(

Toprol XL, Plavix, Lisinipril and Simvastatin....those are the new ones. But it appears I am also retaining fluid again. I also have kidney problems. So, that could be another issue.

I have gained about a half a pound a week since going on a beta blocker. Not much in itself, but over a couple of years its a lot. They recently reduced my dose and I lost 3 lbs. Then, they upped it again, and lo and behold, I gained.

Since being overweight is bad for your heart, I sometimes question if a beta blocker is a good idea?

We could live on 1000 cals a day, but what sort of life would that be?

Good lord, I have been gradually inching up on the scale - Metoprolol could be the culprit? It has never been a struggle until now and I seem more hungry than ever and can't shake off even 5 pounds like I have in the past.

If you find that you are gaining more than a pound or 2 in 24 hours, then you are probably retaining fluid from the congestive heart failure, in which case you should contact your doctor...

I retained fluid until they switched me to Lisinopril- HCTZ (it's combined with Hydrochlorathiazide... a diuretic). I haven't had any problems with swollen feet since.

Mine turns out to be most likely the chronic kidney disease. As one of the side affects of using ibuprofen for years prescribed by my doctor, I have kidney problems. My Nephrologist told me to get back on my lasix and go from there. Well, seems to be helping. If it isn't one thing..it's something else.

Hi I take Atenolol and indepamide for water wt. I think.
I also take Lisenapril .Ive taken for years. I seem to be okay as far as wt. but I do have to watch my wt. Lately after I had a stent put in 6 mon ago ,I seem like Ive gained a couple of pounds ,maybe 5 in 6 mon.But I take Plavix and a Cholesteral med and aspirin .Not to mention quitting smoking.

My kidney doctor said today that none of those meds would cause weight gain. In my case, it is fluid retention from the congestive heart failure and the kidney problems I already have...so I'm back on Lasix.

What meds are you taking?

Diovan, plavix, aspirin, simvastatin, prozac, plaquinel, toprol, advair and singular. I have a host of medical problems. The weight gain has stopped. Part of it is now I need to watch calories. I am very salt restricted and lost 50 pounds. Gained 8 back and now I feel it is due to what I am eating. I fell off the wagon on my birthday and am taking time getting completely back on.
