Finally off Toprol XL

0 Recommendations

Hi, I'm finally off my Toprol XL 200mg my doctor is starting to listen when I tell him that I've done everything but, was unable to loose any weight in fact I just keep gaining . SOOOO, now we are going to try Procardia XL 60Mg and a water pill. The water pill is being used because my ankles are starting to swell. Wish me luck because if this works I'm off I hope for good.

Let me know if it works. I take 150mg of Toprol XL a day and keep gaining weight too.

Hi, good news for you! I'm also determined to get off the beta blocker, I just wanted to ask how you came off it, did you do it slowly or just stop?
Thanks,
Lid xx

I just noticed you're new here so I wanted to say welcome to the group!

Not my experience but just had a friend go through a process of reducing her BP meds. She took a beta blocker and a ACE inhibitor. PCP had her wean off the beta blocker (w/o incident) and reduce the ACE inhibitor. Then she had a cardio appt. Cardio agreed w/PCP but wanted her to go off the ACE and back to a lower dosage of the beta blocker (load on heart given her echo ....)

So, she stopped ACE cold-turkey and back on beta blocker. She was wiped out, so cardio had her reduce beta blocker dosage substantially --- and told her she didn't need to wean down to that smaller dosage. She now knows NOT to do that again .... she had a headache for several days ..... even though her BP was still in normal range -- just higher than her body was accustomed to.

I personally use hawthorn capsules. I have not tried hawthorn syrup. Hawthorn works like a beta blocker. Google up hawthorn for more information.

Hi! That's really interesting, thank you, I'll do some googling and find out more. It's only now, two years on, that I'm finally getting to understand the why's and wherefore's of all this medication we get given and the side-effects and contraindications too. I read that beta-blocker with diuretic is no longer first line treatment and hasn't been since 2006, at least not in England and that this combo can greatly increase the risk of developing type II Diabetes so stopping the beta-blocker makes sense, especially since my blood pressure has never been high and my pulse is now less then 50, my pulse pre MI was always in the low 60's, and I'm fed up with feeling lethargic, it's not 'me'!

Hi again, thanks for the warm welcome. Just to answer a few of your questions. I did not stop the toprol xl cold turkey as a matter of fact I started cutting them and only taking half but (I started this on my own) while still taking procardia xl , my blood pressure was being monitored very closely by the company nurse. It wasn't until I returned to the doctor for my visit and he told me my pressure was good did I reveal this info to him. That's when he decided it was worth a try to take me off of the Toprol but I would remain on the Procardia just adding a water pill its been a little over a week and im still doing great my pressure is good. Now only time will tell because the Toprol is still in my system. I will keep you guys posted on my progress. :)
