feet swelling

0 Recommendations

Does anyone have feet and ankle swelling? When I first started my BP med my ankles swelled and doctors said that was a side effect of the meds. But now the top of my feet are swollen and sometimes my toes. Does anyone know if this means anything. It comes and goes but seems worse lately. Hot, humid weather maybe? Or should I be concerned?

Hi! Traveling and heat cause my ankles to swell. They really started to get bad about 3 years ago, and maybe before, because I felt so lousy I really didn't notice. I went to my primary and she had some tests done on the circulation in my legs. She prescribed medium strength knee-high compression hose. Wearing these keeps the swelling down. I wear the open toe ones because they are more comfortable. I usually wear socks over them. Discuss it with your doctor, and the doctor can run some tests. I'm followed closely so I know it is not from congestive heart failure. Usually if there is a blood clot one leg will swell more than the other. Wearing compression hose has kept me from a diuretic, at least so far. Elevating your feet can also help to a certain degree. Main thing - consult your doctor. Blessings! Great-gram

I buy my compression socks at Ames.com. They have all kinds and all prices. I do take a diuretic and wear the stockings. I started with 8-15mm and also use the 15-20. They are hard to get on and off but hubby takes them off for me. Thyroid problems can also cause swelling of the feet and so can sitting at the computer for long hours as this is like sitting in the car on a long road trip. Some Meds also and also asthma inhalers can cause swelling. Advil causes swelling with me as does Amoxcillan. Good Luck.

What type of blood pressure medicine do you take?
I take Norvasc for high blood pressure and heart spasms. It can cause swollen ankles and feet in some and I had to reduce my dosage because of it.

Hi,

I have had feet and ankle swelling since my heart attack in 2005. I have been to kidney spcialist, vascular specialist, cardiologist and regular doc. I wore compression stocking for 6 months with no relief so I don't wear them anymore because they are near impossible for me to get on with RA problems.
I take 3 blood pressure meds, diovan, metropol and hytrin and 40 mg of lasix plus a boat load of other meds. When I get out of bed in the morning I have nice ankles but by the time I am finished in the bathroom doing moring wash up, hair, curling iron ect.
my ankles are like little ballons. Because of arthritis it takes me an hour in the bathroom so I am standing the whole time. I move to a vanity to do make up and can sit for that. None of these doctors seem to care that my ankles are swollen. They feel like if I stuck a pin in them they would explode. I have give up and just accept the fact that my feet and ankles are always swollen.

Warm Regards,

Rose

I can't believe your doctors aren't taking this more seriously - it can be a sign of water retention, and the excess fluids put a major strain on your heart! Water retention is very common with heart disease problems, and a simple diuretic can help. I take mine as soon as I wake up, then I can go to the bathroom a lot while I am getting ready for the day. By the time I leave, I've 'gotten rid' of a lot of the excess fluids, and I'm good to go. (Never take them just before bed, unless you want to get up a lot!) Whenever I travel, I take extra with me and take an additional 1/2 tablet at the first sign of swelling. To check, take your finger and lay it flat against a large swollen area, and push down. If your finger easily 'dents' in the tissue and leaves a depression for a short time, but fills back in fairly quickly, it is most likely fluid retention. If your doctor blows you off for this or ANY reason EVER, remind him/her that you are paying for their time and attention, and if he doesn't value your money, let alone your health!, you will take it elsewhere. I'm amazed that we will put up with poor service from our doctors, where we wouldn't from a plumber or other 'service person'. I'm a medical professional, and have no problem changing doctors if I don't feel like I am being taken seriously. I always ask, "What would you advise if I were your mother?" It's amazing how often they stop, think some more, then either change their advice or explain their reasoning. Good luck and keep in touch!

Hi. Are you watching your sodium/salt intake? If not, may cause fluid retention.

Each doctor say that it is not from their area of treatment. My lasix makes me run until near noon. If I have a meeting at work I can't take it because I go every 45 min or hour from 7:30 till noon.

I do watch my sodium intake. Before the heart attack I was a salt alocholic. Love the stuff. Now I use very little and try to stay in the guidelines. It was hard because I am a picky eater and do not like a lot of spices that satisfy others like garlic, onions and hot stuff. Mrs. Dash's makes me gag. So I have adjusted to boring food. It would be worth it if it made me lose weight but no such luck.

Have a nice day.

Warm regards,

Rose
