Drugs that should not be taken with Prinzmetal

0 Recommendations

Hello all,
I have been going through a terrible time with depression so haven't been on lately. I have been doing some research on depression/ prinzmetal/ and drugs. As far as the drugs I have run into other drugs that say not to take if you have prinzmetal or long qt.

Just recently I was prescribed for the 3 time a drugs called Levaquin (750 mg) for pneumonia. Each time I have had terrible reactions to it. I would ask anyone who is prescribed this drug, even without Prinzmetal to look it up before taking. I was also given a shot of steroid, which I later read is contridicted with this drug. The chest pains among other side effects have been horrible.

As I was researching this drug I ran across a list of drugs that should not be taken especially if you have a long qt. Another drug I had been given for depression was on there.

I guess this discussion is about different drugs those of us with Prinzmetal have been given and had bad reactions to or ones you know of that should not be given to people with our disease. I am finding out that my doctor does no research before handing me medicine and then I am the one who later suffers. I have come to research everything myself because doctors not familiar with this disease are still not taking it seriously.

Anyone else on depression medicine and have you found one that is really working well for you?

Well sorry I have been gone for so long, with the depression and feeling worse I just couldn't think of much to say. My husband also found out last month that he has cancer and will be having surgery to remove it on my birthday, July 13th. Please say a prayer for him.

God bless heart sisters,
Dee Marie

Hi Moonfaire

Good to hear you again. Sorry youve been so depressed, and about your husband. Have you tried seretone 5HTP? Its an amino acid ,seretonin that makes tryptofan in brain. Dont know if its compatable with other drugs or not , or with Prinzmetal. I take about 25mg now and then ,any more makes me high, but not high like prozac or other SSRI I was on .
Best wishes

Hana

Hi Dee Marie,
I was just searching for anyone who had posted regarding Levaquin side effects. I was given Levaquin for kidney infection this week and from the first day had angina. I have never had angina or any heart pain even when I had MI or even prior to my quad bypass. This was really scary. I am on Dr. Mercola's email list and on today's email there are 6 10 minute Youtube videos about Levaquin. They will scare your pants off. I can not believe my PC doctor prescribed such a questionable drug for my mild kidney infection. I have not been treated for a kidney infection in over 40 years so it wasn't like I was a chronic case. Anyway, check out what Dr. Mercola's site has to say about Levaquin in particular. Needless to say, I am discontinuing my Levaquin (only have one pill left to take). We all need a drug advocate. I asked the pharmacist about reaction when I got my medicine filled and she said there were no known side effects with my current meds. Who do we trust?
I do take Vitamin D for depression and it has really helped me. Have you tried that? I also sit in the sun 20 minutes a day every day possible. I hope you sort it all out. The ladies on this site are so helpful.

Love and blessing,
Carolyn

Dee Marie, I was diagnosed with prinzmetal at Cleveland Clinic in 2006 via ergonovine. I am on lexapro as my dr here and at clinic said that was least likely to cause spasm. There is a class of antidepressant (can't remember which one) that is okay to use and one that is not. I have taken levaquin and have not had problems! Good luck Sharon

I suppose this is off topic, but with the prinzmentals I can atleast usually exercise but with the heat here in Austin Texas it's awful. When buying a new home and starting my divorce I ended up losing 18 pounds in 2 weeks and have gained only 4 back. I'm 5' 7" and now back up to 115 but need to gain more. I just have no appetite and forget to eat. It's so frustrating to be out of breathe just from walking from my parking garage that's outside to the building I work in. Last summer wasn't bad, I was still playing tennis, this summer I can't even walk my dog. I am tofranil for depression since SSRI's don't work for me, I had an eating disorder (bulemia) but having been well for 22 years. Does the heat affect the other prinzmental patients, like 106 degrees with very high humidity? Any ideas on exercises? I did lift some weight while watching tv last night.

Thank you all and good luck,
Sandy

The heat and humidity here in Philadelphia is oppresive. So much so that I can't sit by the pool as it zaps me of energy and it is hard to breathe. I do work out at a club which is helpful.

Okay, so it's not just me. Thank you!

Hi Dee Marie,

I just saw this post. I'm sorry I didn't come across it sooner. You are dealing with so much right now.

First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY on July 13th!! (smile)

Secondly, how did your husband's surgery go? My, you've had your heart and hands full haven't you.

Lastly, have you gotten a break from the spasms yet? I find that high summer humidity combined w temps around 90 and above are too much. Do my best to stay in the AC or in constant shade if I must be outside for any length of time. Or get outside stuff done very early in the morning, before 9am broiler begins.

hugs to you and I wish both you and hubby well,
Jaynie
