Doctors dismissing your pain

Has anyone made a complaint to the College of Physicians and surgeons? If so did you get a response?

You will get a response and they do investigate. Don't expect any results, I don't know of anyone who has had any success in that area. It is very pro doctor. So the only benefit long term is that the doctor will have a record of a complaint on their file. If they had multiple complaints against the same physician, they might take some action. You will get a response from them. You have to decide really whether or not it is worth the effort on your part, the college is not really a patient advocacy environment. May be more stress than it is worth. If your complaint is against a doctor in the hospital setting you might get more results from addressing your concerns to the hospital administration.

I made a complaint about a physician to the hospital. I was told that they would investigate my serious complaint. They got back to me with a letter saying they investigated and found that the dr behaved appropriately. Yeah right. I was told that the hospital cannot admit to any wrong doing or it opens them to a lawsuit. I never thought to complain to the agency you mentioned. Maybe I will do that just so it is on this dr's record. Really disappointed in the hospital by know they need to cover their rear ends.
I also talked to several lawyers about a malpractice suit but do not have the money to hire one. The lawyers that advertise on TV make me nervous. Also afraid of the stress this would cause. I do believe the dr should be made to go back to school and learn that yes women do have heart attacks and not to dismiss them as just women complaining

Oh I feel you, this year I had to be taken to the emergency room for chest pains and the young male doctor was a butt head. I tried to explain to him how the endothelial dsyfunction worked causing spasms of my heart microvessels so the test come back normal. Of course he didn't have his active listening ears on. Because the tests were normal, I was not in pain. Just to apease me he had the nurse give me 5ml of morphine. I explained that 3 times a day I take 75mg of morphine with 15mg oxycodone six times a day and various other pills so I don't think the 5ml was going to do much. Oh well, I just needed to get home because he wasn't going to do anything for me. What really got me and the reason I called and complained was as I was sitting in the room he was at the desk talking to the Cardiologist on call and I could hear him. He actually said to that doctor, I have a lady here that has nothing wrong with her except she needs her hand held. If I hadn't been in so much pain, I would have poked him in the nose. He came over to release me and actually told me that, well, you're lucky at least you can't die from that disease you have. Five weeks later I was brought in by ambulance having a heart attack to the same ER. Funny... They sent me a letter back appologizing for his behavior.

Best of luck to all of you. Hugs and prayers,
Christie

I once made a compliant to my state medical board about a doctor and they did pull my medical files. In my letter that they sent to me after investigating my compliant they would not tell me the outcome. You can rate your doctor on http://php.ratemds.com/social/

Hello duggenben - Sounds like you're in Ontario, right? Here in British Columbia, our College of Physicians & Surgeons has a user-friendly protocol for filing complaints - https://www.cpsbc.ca/node/181 - Every Canadian province has something similar.

In addition, we also have something in place here called the Patient Care and Quality Review Board - http://www.patientcarequalityreviewboard.ca/

These programs exist for a reason. You may or may not be successful in changing behaviours or provoking sanctions against your particular physician, but as others have mentioned already, if a file of prior issues becomes attached to an individual's file, the College is better able to monitor, evaluate, and discipline that doc if appropriate.

If patients refuse to participate in these options, we can't really whine about Dr. So-and-So's inferior care. And taking action in a pro-active fashion like this always feels more satisfying than meekly complaining to your friends and family. This is your right.

Good luck to you!

XOXOXO
