SOY!!!

0 Recommendations

Actually, this probably should go to all sites. I just saw a "crawler", the script that goes across the bottom of the screen, on CNN that says the Journal of Human Reproduction has announced that "even modest amounts of soy can halve (cut by half) sperm production".

So all those that have laughed at us for avoiding soy can take a second look at all the products to avoid that we've been talking about amongst ourselves.

Now, it's not just those of us with er+ cancer that must be concerned about avoiding soy, it's men too!

First, school me on er+ cancer...

Avoiding soy for what specific reason? I don't like soy or soy products myself and tend to stay away from them. My daughter however is allergic to milk of any kind and drinks soy when her father makes her, I simply do not force her to drink soy milk.

I'm curious, because Soy at one time was the "rave" and cureall for everything, and seemingly, it's these natural products that are now being looked at more and found NOT to be the best choice.

Or, is it a matter of too much of a good thing?

My curiosity is piqued regardless of how old this post is!

The problem that frightened so many people with soy, is it contains compounds that mimic and behave the same way as estrogen. I was told that the body treats it as estrogen and so do cancer cells. The er+ on a cancer diagnosis means that there are estrogen receptors in the cancer cells and they are fueled by estrogen to grow faster, bigger, stronger. That's why premenopausal women occasionally have to have their ovaries removed (to prevent the main source of estrogen for a woman's body), are put on Arimidex (which I'm on the keep the estrogen from binding to a cancer cell), and are more and more being told to avoid soy. I first hear it in an online chat room and later asked a nurse that confirmed the finding. There are still ongoing tests to find out just how big a problem it is for those of us that have er+ cancer, but preliminary results looked pretty incriminating. I stopped eating as much soy as I could but if you start reading labels you will find that there is soy in almost *everything* that is packaged, processed, baked, breaded or fried. There is even soy in vitamins, ice cream, some candy and almost all baked goods.

You know the melamine problem with Chinese pet foods and now baby formula and milk? They put melamine in products to up the protein count in the foods because melamine tricks the equipment and also the body into thinking it's getting protein. Well, does soy do the same things in the human body? Just how dangerous this is, is still being studied.

As women we know about the feminizing effects of estrogen but just how much affect is that having on the men who eat and drink lots of soy? That is an interesting study that is just getting started. Results won't be fully understood for many years.

I just did a new search for soy and cancer cells and the pendelum is swing again. The first page on the search talks about soy possibly inhibiting cancer cell production so my best advise is the same as it has always been, just eat right! Lean meats, limit red meat consumption, eat lots of fruit and veggies (Especially broccoli. That's the new miracle food it seems! LOL!), and get your excercise.

To do your own research, put "soy and cancer cells" in Google and start reading. Make sure you're enjoying the read with a nice cup of green tea and you'll be getting the effects of the last miracle food that was touted to cure everything.

Makes sense, the er+. Makes more sense on soy and er+ connection too. I remember a product by Reliv that claimed to calm the effects of menopause...it did help quite a few individuals that I knew that bought it. IT was expensive too, I think they've given up on drinking it after all this time though.

I eat normal, don't do fast food but maybe 2 times a year if that. Simply don't do well with fast food so I avoid it. Don't eat out much either for that matter. I like to cook and do limit what's been reported as bad, but who knows, next year it might be reported as the next new miracle too? Sad but true, remember all the talk at one point about how bad coffee drinking was and now it's found to have no real effects in moderation? Odd really. I am not one to jump on the bandwagon with new fads and supposed cures, I tend to hang back and stay the course until it's been proven without a doubt.

Moderation in everything is what my momma always said.

Snake oil anyone?
