Does anybody have depression and mood swings?

0 Recommendations

I was diagnosed in 1994. I used to take D-penicillamine and have been taking Galzin for 3 years.
I had mostly hepatic symptoms. I've never got evaluated for psychiatric symptoms.

I just think my depression and mood swing don't seem to go away with the treatment.

Does anybody experience same condition as me?
Do you know if it can get better?

Thank you.

My husband suffers from depression, anxiety, mood swings, etc. He has for the entire time we've been married. Our marriage has been a rollercoaster, literally. A few yrs ago I got online and read up on everything WD related. Seems like it's a given, that WD patients have many emotional issues... perhaps from copper build up? It was a relief for me to figure out why he was so emotional, or easily excitable. Knowing that he can't help it, because of the WD, has made me more patient with him, more understanding, and I've learned ways to help "bring him down" from being emotional over simple things that aren't worth getting excited about. It's been a long road... but I love him... and it was worth doing research and learning how to help him. He's not on medication. We thought we would try other techniques, simply talking and praying, to help control his depression/emotional symptoms... but perhaps in the future we may look to meds. But not at this time. Good luck to you. You may get better over time. I don't know. Sorry I can't be more helpful as I'm the wife of someone with it. Maybe someone here with it themselves can help you more.

God bless

I can't believe that your husband is not taking any medication--believe me, his wilson's disease won't disappear by talk or prayer--it's a progressive genetic disease that will eventually kill him without treatment.

If you truly care about your husband you need to get him to a specialist immediately--preferably in Ann Arbor where they have a wilson's disease clinic at the university hospital. If your husband does not want to take prescription meds he can take non-prescription zinc gluconate (a form of zinc available at any health food store) preferably in capsule form--minimum of 50 mg up to 100 mg--one capsule three times a day or at least twice daily on an empty stomach (2 hours after eating/drinking and 1 hour before eating or drinking anything but water.

Any medications for wilson's disease MUST be taken on an empty stomach--it would otherwise will not be absorbed properly and food interferes with zinc or any other med absorption.

I also recommend ground flaxseed to help stabilize his mood swings. The omega 3 fats in flaxseed meal are very beneficial to physical/emotional health and I personally add one tablespoon a day to my salad or cold cereal to wonderful effect--I have not suffered from depression or mood swings for the last several years that I've added flaxseed to my diet. It's very tasty and available in health food stores. If you buy it whole you need to grind the seed sup in a coffee grinder but it is sold already ground up.

Good luck.

I used to experience moderate depression for many years and have wd but since adding a tablespoon of ground flaxseed meal (available at health food stores) to my cereal or salad every day my mood has been very stable and I don't experience any severe lows or highs. The omega 3 fats in flaxseed are helpful in maintaining physical and emotional health and there have been a number of studies confirming the beneficial effects of omega 3's.
It tastes quite good and has a nutty flavor. I'm very grateful that I discovered this delicious way to banish the blues.

Good luck.

Yup.

If by "the treatment" you mean the Galzin (zinc), then, no, it's not designed to help with depression. Just to reduce the intake of copper into your system from the food you eat.

There are anti-depressants that work, but it's up to you and your physician to determine if you need them. I can't remember which ones... though Lexapro comes to mind... are safe for the liver.

My understanding is that exercise helps with reducing depression. As far as mood swings... well, dunno if you are female or male, but I know mine are tied into my "womanly cycles." I suspect men have a version of this, too. :)

Hope this is of some help.

HI, I also suffer from depression and severe mood swings, which drive my husband crazy! I do though, take vitamin B6 and zinc supplements everyday. It seems that B6 (both recomended by 2 diff doctors) help greatly with my temper. Hope this helps!

Yes, and getting my Copper down to a more suitable level did nothing to improve the mood disorders either. That part requires it's own separate set of treatments.

Thank you so much for all your reply. I am taking Flax oil, Vitamin C and B-6, and hoping to get better.

I hope the supplements help you and they certainly won't harm you but do make sure to take them separately from your galzin or other form of zinc.
Esther
