Wilson's patient's children

0 Recommendations

I am a mother of 2 who just found out I have Wilson's. I am getting my children's blood work done this week to see what the ceruloplasmin and liver enzymes are. My children are 3 and 6.

If anyone else has Wilson's and had children what tests did you have done to rule out Wilson's in your child? I realize that there is a 1 in 180 or 1 in 200 (I've seen both) chance they could have it but it still worries me as a mother.

It might just be easier to have your husband tested to see if he carries the WD gene. If he doesn't, it's most likely that your kids don't have WD (unless they got a spontaneous mutation, which is very rare). I think that would just be an easier route (especially with children).

We had my husband tested to see if he carried the WD gene before getting pregnant, so we'd know our odds.

Good luck!

Dear Stacey 221,
I had my all childeren's blood tested and their DNA tested(in London England) too. I had also got my wife tested for WD. My iwfe does not have WD gene. Though my daughters Ceruloplazimin is just on the lower side of normal they are just the carrier of WD. Meiisa did the write thing of getting her husband checked out before getting pregnant.
The DNA test in US is costly business. So it is better if you get your husband tested first. If you husband hasn' t the WD Gene then the chances of your childeren getting WD is less. They will be only carriers of WD. Don' t worry too much. Your children will be fine. Nest wishies from me.

kalapi,

Thanks to all who responded. I would have had my husband tested for the gene before having children, except I was unaware that I had Wilson's at the time- I was 25 when I had my first child, 28 for my second and just found out at 31 that I had Wilson's. Since I have no symptoms there was no reason not to think I was perfectly healthy... guess life just throws a curveball every now and then. I'm just hoping that all turns out well with the kids and I plan on looking into the DNA testing. Thanks again =)

Kids tests came back this week and everything is within normal limits- whew! They did let us know that we should monitor them and retest as they get older just to be safe. Thanks to everyone for your support!
