Trietene?

0 Recommendations

Okay, so I was diagnosed with WD when I 13. I went on the double blind study at the University of Michigan with Dr. Brewer, after being on the study for eight weeks I was released and put on Zinc Accetate for maintanence treatment. Shortly after I turned 18 however the Zinc stopped working so the doctors put me on a low dose of Trietene. So I have been on trietene for a little less than a year and a half, my copper levels have been good for the most part, but now I'm wondering if I should try to go back on the Zinc because of all I've heard Trietene isn't meant to be taken permanently. So I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this. Thanx!

Alysa, I know you live in southern ca. There are some good doctor's in UCLA I go to Dr. Ament and have gone to him since i was 8 years old and i'm now 22 years old. I love going to him he has helped me threw alot if he doesn't know somehting he looks into and calls you back that week with some answers. I will try and get in touch with him and see if there is any other doctors there that deal with Wilsons diease i know dr. ament has 4 or 5 patients with it. He is amazing!!! You might have to travel but its worth it trust me. I live in bakersfield and i'm just now finding a few good doctors that know about wilsons. I hope things work out with the mood swings. I've actually been on syprine for about 4 years now and my mood swings have done a lot better then when i was on penecillimine. And, today I got a phone call from a doctor and they told me to stop syprine because my copper levels are way to low. I've had a lot of symptoms that most people haven't had.

I know I'm a bit young for this but it is another concern of mine, I have also heard that while on trietene its extremely difficult to have children. Is this true? I'm not sure of a whole lot with the WD anymore, as I'm becoming an adult more questions are coming up, I'm currently looking for a doctor, I havn't had one specifically for WD in a long time. I'm experiencing new symptoms as well, having random bouts of depression and mood swings of which I never had before. These symptoms, though, I am handling a lot better now, especially with the support I am getting from boyfriend, he is so patient and caring. Thank you for any advice that you have!

Alysa, I was on Trientine for 16 years with no problems. Zinc is considered the best maintenance drug for wd, but some people are happy staying on Trientine forever.
