sports and enlarged spleen

0 Recommendations

I have a 16 year old son who was diagnosed January 2007. In the past 11 months his spleen has continued to be enlarged. He wants to race on his High School ski team but can't get clearance because of the enlarged spleen. Does this usually improve with time? Or are the docs overly cautious? All contact sports are a risk they tell us.

Hi TJ,

I would advise your son listen to his doctor. He is lucky to have found a doctor that cares.

I was diagnosed in 1966, at 19 & was always involved in sports; hockey, baseball, golf, baseball. My side where my spleen is would get sore, but I had no doctor to tell me not to play sports. I am still around & intact & stil going strong at 60, although my sports are mostly just in front of the TV now.

In my middle years my spleen would get sore when I was tired, but hasn't bothered me for a long, long time. In fact, you mentioning an enlarged spleen brought back memories.

Your son will be able to continue his sports soon. I know that 16 is a difficult age to take medication, especially if he is involved in sports. Mary is grey today, because of her sons. But, it is really important that ALL Wilson's patients take their meds. I will allow your son to miss 2 doses a year.

When your son gets decoppered & on Zinc he can probably take 2 does a day. That is a lot easier then even 3.

Good luck.

An "OLD" timer,
George
