Hi , We have just got back results of tests done 24 hr urine zinc and copper and serum copper. The labs here in South Africa give values in umol/l and umol/24hr. Could someone please give me the values in micrograms and milligrams/?
Concentration Zinc 77.2 umol/l in volume of 1200ml urine/24hr
Zinc output 92.6umol/l
Copper Concentration 0.84 umol/l Copper output l.008 umol/24 hrs volume l200.
Serum copper l.7umol/l
These are the results after taking l50mg daily of zinc picolinate after approx 8 weeks. Are they within the parameters of efficacy being on zinc treatment?
Thanks

Falls Syprine Penicillamine

doctors recently told us zinc was no longer beneficial and could be damaging to someone with Wilson's. They even thought it contributed to his death. Please contact the doctors at Rochester Mayo Clinic in MN. They are well versed on this disease. My brother lived in LasVegas and was not able to transfer there fast enough. They saved his life 8 years ago and I know if there hadn't been so much red tape they would have again.

Best wishes and prayers

Hi, My son, was diagnosed 14 years ago and has been on, initially penicillamine for about two years and thereafter syprine, and has been well controlled. We live in South Africa and syprine is not available here, and have had to rely on the WDA for supplies. We are now using zinc as a maintenance therapy, after doing research and being in contact with Dr. Brewer. I find it very confusing and distressing that there should
be such diverse opinions about using zinc. I thank you for your comment. Best wishes.

Maya,

I don't know how to interpret those labs, but Dr. Brewer's group (or Dr. Askari's) should be able to help you. Since this is a rare disease, it often falls on our shoulders to watch our progress or lack of progress-- don't worry about the people who didn't do well on zinc-- just notice how your son is doing on zinc. Everyone reacts differently to different meds and zinc is no different in that sense to any other medication. Zinc picolinate is the most bioavailable type of zinc on the market and that is a very good thing. That means it should work well. Just watch his levels and observe him for symptoms. Many, many people do very well on zinc.

Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,
I have contacted Dr. Brewer telephonically and he has given me the conversions, and it appears that the results are well within the acceptable parameters. I will monitor every 3 months for the first year, and thereafter at 6/12 months. He is diligent in taking his meds and appears to be tolerating them well. Thank you for replying. Very best wishes.
