platelets

Hey I was just wondering what a "normal" level of platelets are for a WD patient. Mine are supposedly at 49, down from 85 last week. I'm hoping they just screwed up the test...cause otherwise that's over a 40 drop, so yea I was just wondering what a good platelet count would be for me, having WD.
Thanks,
Alysa

Cirrhosis Bruises Penicillamine

Hi Alysa,
WD patients when stable in proper treatment don't generally have a low platelet count.
Platelets can go low if there is liver / spleen functional impairment, or extreme over treatment can cause it, as well as many causes unrelated to WD.
I did not have a problem from my low platelet count.
Try not to worry. Watch for any s/o bleeding -- easy bruises, black or bloody stool, nosebleeds, vomiting blood or coffee ground looking material.
Take Care,

Hi everyone
My daughter platelets count is also low and her spleen is abnormally big. She has been under Penicillamine the last 10 months. Finally we are about to switch to Zinc in the coming days. I don’t have the platelets count numbers with me right now but if you are interested I can send the results next Monday. Doctors told us that that is a result of a liver malfunction. Her liver biopsy showed cirrhosis but nothing serious to make us think of a transplant yet. We are hoping for a liver regeneration to avoid the transplant. We also believe that with time platelets and spleen will improve. Mean while doctors told us that she can go on with her life whit these symptoms periodically monitored.
I hope that my comments help.
Kind regards
