Looking for a dr

0 Recommendations

Hi All,
I am new to the discussion group. I have been following discussions and see what a wonderful community the WD group has developed.
I have 2 brothers with WD. One is in extremely poor health, the other takes over the counter zinc, but hasn't been to a dr in many, many years.
I would like for my son and I to be tested for WD. My son has slight skeletal abnormalities. One side of his chest wall is noticeably bigger than the other. He has also had surgery on both feet. He has no arch whatsoever.
If anyone is familiar with the Tampa FL area and surrounding communities, Brandon and Riverview in particular, do you know of doctors here that have worked with WD patients? Our family PCP knows very little about WD and has never had a patient with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

I'm not in the FL area, but maybe I can offer some advice. I would think that your PCP would have recommened or refered your family to a liver specialist, if not, look in your phone book for one. It is very important for your brother to go back to the doctor for follow ups. It's very important to keep his copper levels in check. His medicine might need to be re-evaluated and the dosage might need to be modified.
Has the brother who is in poor health been properly tested? Is he on Zinc?
I would also recommend you and your son be tested for Wilson's. Your husband might need to be checked also.
Good luck!

Thank you for the advice. I will ask my PCP for a referral to a liver specialist. She didn't mention it at all when I first spoke to her. I have 3 brothers. All in North Dakota. I need to ask the 3rd one what his PCP did for an evaluation and figure out if he should be rechecked as well.
The one in poor health lived in another state for many years and occasionally went to his neurologist. He has the KF rings. I really don't think he takes his meds on a regular basis. I will be home in ND in May and am scheduling an appointment for him now so I can go with him when I'm home.
Thanks again
