help 5 yrs old huuuuge copper excretion-Liver steak?

0 Recommendations

I am the mother of a 5 years old autistic son that has mercury toxicity. I would appreciate if you could advise me on the following.
We measured his Fecal Toxic Metal Excretion after administering him a chelating agent to pull out mercury. At our surprise the level of Copper pulled out was huge: 1500 mg/kg versus a reference range of < 60 (Doctors Data Labs).
We know that he ate several steaks of veal liver during the week of the test. My question is: Could just that be the cause of such a huge excretion of copper, or do you think that there might be another reason?

We are seriously worried. We would greatly appreciate your comment.

Thank you all for your precious comments, my son's phisician just prescribed the Serum Ceruloplasmin and we are waiting for the results, although he has never seen such a huge excretion of Copper, he is familiar with Zinc/Copper inbalance that are so typical in kids with autism. My son has still a heavy metal toxicity and we are doing chelation to get the metals out of his body. I'll keep you posted with the results.
Thanks again

Sorry...Melissa's right - liver is very high in copper. The website I was looking at had a "-" indicating "no data available". Www.nutritiondata.com is a better site for anyone looking for nutritional info.
Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D.'s book, Why Am I Always So Tired, talks about copper imbalance and has 10 pages listing the amounts of copper and zinc in varioius foods.
How is your little guy doing now? Does he seem to be feeling any better?

Animal livers are high in copper and should be avoided in WD patients. I think I remember hearing about Dr. Brewer doing a study (several years ago) on the copper levels found in feces in WD patients. Unfortunately I don't have any other information about it. Hopefully someone else will.

I would just request to have a 24 hour urine copper to see if those levels come back high as well. And possibly have the other diagnostic tests done to rule out WD as a possibility.

Good luck!!

I'm not certain what fecal levels would be or could be indicative of a problem with copper.

In a normal liver you would excrete whatever you ate in exactly that way, whereas if you have Wilson's Disease your liver does not correctly process all of the copper and a much larger than normal amount comes out in urine. A 24-hr urine copper test would be the most non-invasive deterministic way of figuring out whether or not to pursue the WD angle.

This isn't to say that there is not some other problem that is not WD related. Copper is both necessary in small amounts and toxic in large buildups. Did you speak with a doctor about this?
