What is wrong with this??

ok so this has nothing to do with my goals or weight loss, i guess just my opinion. I walk my kids to school, 1/2 mile not far at all, i have 3 currently going to school but have to bring my 2 younger ones with me. I am the only parent I see that walks to school with their kids, all the kids I see walk alone, or with other kids. I am scared to let my kids walk alone, (poor kids probably feel embarrased)I know in Michigan you cant even run in and out of a party store without taking your kids with you, I heard that even when you go in to pay for gas your suppose to take them in. Why is it illegal to leave them in the car for that short of a time, (I know about the heat factor and all) paying for gas or a quick run in to party store etc, when were allowed to let them walk to school at such a young age alone? I have seen kids younger than my twins walk to school alone my twins are 7, and I am just talking about 1 kid, not a group of kids without an adult?? Isnt that just as dangerous in the factor of getting taken?
i dont know maybe im just ignorant about that stuff, I have lived in the country my whole life, so here I am on the outskirts of Raleigh NC, went from country to city and wow what a difference. maybe its that, i dont know, but what I do know is this...........If I played lazy and let my kids walk to school alone and something happened to them. i would never NEVER forgive myself. I had them and they are my responsibility to take care of and protect for now. some people might call it oversheltering? maybe so. I dont think it is worth the risk of gambling it.
I dont believe my kids mind me walking with them either really I believe it show them that I care. well getting long, just throwing out my opinion on something thats been on my mind. Angela
