Watch out for Prozac!

My mother has VHL, and we all know that there is something different in each of us that changes our health state. Well, for her, tumor growth always happens when she is stressed or depressed. At both of these times our body's cortisol levels are high. So, doesn't it make sense that cortisol is the key factor in tumor growth for this one particular person? But, since it is only this one person with this rare disease, not many studies have been conducted linking cortisol and Prozac. So it is no doctor's fault if they prescribe you Prozac while knowing you have VHL, the two are not linked in their minds. My mother was prescribed Prozac for her recent depression. So I, knowing that cortisol contributes to her tumor growth, researched cortisol and Prozac, and it turns out your body's cortisol levels are doubled every pill and a half ! So for her, every time she takes that Prozac, her tumors grow. NOT A GOOD THING! She started the Prozac 4 weeks ago, and as for the depression, it works great! But her tumors on her kidneys grew and she got a new tumor in her eyeball. All of you beware of the hidden hormones released in any medication, and know what your certain inhibitor is.

I'm not a doctor or anything but I think you have it backwards. If you had a pheo, that is releasing hormones that produce the "fight or flight" response, the pituitary gland will release more cortisol then it should, causing a lot of the symptoms of the pheo (weight, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, ect). If Prozac causing more cortisol to be released, then it is making the symptoms worse, but not necessarily making the tumor worse.

What about the added hormones in birthcontrol and tumor growth? Does anyone have similair concerns? I also take Klonopin 1 mg for anxiety, should i be concerned about this medication too?

ladybug,

When you talk about phoes, what do you mean about "weight?" Weight gain, weight loss?

Hi All,
This is a question I have been trying to get the answer for. Can some one look into the research and let us know what to do. I have been told to not take anything hormone related because of the growth effect it would have on my brain and kidney tumors. Will the SSRI inhibitor meds like Prosac and Celebrex cause this tumor growth spurt. Being that those types of drugs for anxiety and depression are the most popular, what can we do?? Anybody?? Joyce help us out if you can! My two docs don't have a clue about it and want to know where this research comes from and what exact hormones it involves. Thanks!
