Recurring kidney cancer

0 Recommendations

I had a partial nephrectomy in 2007 to remove a tumor off my right kidney (renal cell carcinoma). I was told I have VHL and have been having biyearly scans. Before my tumor was removed I was wasting potassium however, I have not had any symptoms of potassium wasting until recently. I am curious if anyone has experienced potassium wasting with VHL and if anyone that has underwent a partial nephrectomy if the kidney cancer has come back.

This is my first blog or post so I am very new to this. Any information is very helpful and appreciated.

Nothing to add reguarding potassium, but w/the partial nephrectomy I can tell you this; my mom has VHL and had a partial neph. She had periodic reviews and about 3yrs later she had to have another surgery b/c the cancer had come back. This time she had to have the rest of that kidney removed. Mom (forgive me for sharing this, Mum even if you don't have internet access!) is in her very early 60's and the surgeries happened in her 50's. I had a partial nephrectomy in 2001 and although I have multiple cysts on both kidneys, no cancer yet. In fact, there was a "suspicious" spot on "Lefty" for the last 2yrs and at my last visit it's mysteriously gone. I asked my dr. what the deal was and he said things change and sometimes it's for the better! I trust him for 2 reasons: 1) he's been my urologist since the word GO and 2) we reviewed the MRI's together, comparing yrs, and yep, sure 'nough it was gone. Good news for me! I hope you (and I!) have many many MANY years of cancer-free livin'!! Good Luck!!

Rebecca.
