Mom's Cataracts

0 Recommendations

I've been diagnosed w/VHL for about 6 yrs. now and am, what I like to call "Circling the Airport" status. This means right now we're waiting and monitoring. I get my kidneys, pancreas, and brain + spinal cord checked yearly or every other year and sort of self monitor for symptoms. I'm the only one in my family that's been "Officially Diagnosed". One sister and her kids were tested...and were negative (thanks God!). The other sister's not tested, but has no symptoms and she's in her late 30's so she's probably ok. Yeah, lucky me. Anyway, by way of my diagnosis we can say with almost 100% assurance that my Mom's the other VHL'er in the fam (as well as her brother and dad). Okay, fam history down. Now for the query...

Called Dad last week for his birthday and he told me Mom went to the eye doc (she's been wearing non-prescription magnifiers for like 10 yrs now), FINALLY went to the eye doc I should say, and she's been diagnosed w/cataracts. I read a little about the eyeball issues, but since the only eye trouble I've had is about a year ago I got glasses from my opthamologist b/c of age, nothing VHL related (again, thanks God!) I really don't know or remember if cataracts fall in the symptoms catagory. Mom's no spring chicken; she's 61 in about a week but she and I both have kidney and pancreas issues and I got the lucky CNS trouble so maybe she got the lucky eyeball trouble?

What do you all think? VHL related or not? Do I hear a maybe and why? Let me say thanks now although I know I'll be saying it again later. You all give some great feedback!

Hi, I had a subcapsular cataract a couple of years back at the age of 30 in my only remaining eye. I believe it was caused by the drugs/steroids that were used after my multiple surgeries on VHL in the retina. As far as I am aware VHL and cataracts are not directly related but the use of medications after eye surgeries for VHL in my case difenatly caused mine. I had a new lens put in and it is an amazing feeling to go from a blurred mess to clear vision. This wasn't for long as I developed a membrane that formed over the new lens, probably caused by the ongoing drugs/steroids again. Dont know if this helps answer your question as there is probably some medical paper out there that links VHL and cataracts. Cheers

Thank you! Your reply did answer some of the questions rolling around in my head. Any info is useful b/c like I said, this is new territory...for both/all of us!
